Excavation Update: 32 West 29th Street

32 West 29th StreetExcavation begins at 32 West 29th Street

Excavation is beginning at 32 West 29th Street, which has no renderings but—per The Real Deal—is under development by Cava Construction. Permits have been filed for a new 21-story hotel, and the neighborhood is certainly a hospitality hotspot, with the NoMad, Ace, and Beatrice hotels all nearby.

The ‘Nomad’ neighborhood has gentrified rapidly in recent years, with the advent of the ‘Silicon Alley’ crowd. As recently as 2008, much of Broadway was dominated by wig shops and fake perfume stores—literally block after block of them—so the progress is definitely welcome.

Unfortunately, Cava Construction’s website does not give good signals regarding the unreleased design. Most of their work appears to be very budget-oriented; not a bad thing in and of itself, but their projects seem to be aesthetically unfortunate. Hopefully the new hotel at 32 West 29th isn’t comparable to the average Kaufman or Poon, but early indications are that the new project will, in fact, be ugly.

I think New York City should be competing for tallest building in the world, just wishful thinking I guess.
