Construction Update: The Hudson Yards

Excavation is now moving along at Related’s Hudson Yards development, with major progress evident at the site of the future Coach headquarters – aka ‘The South Tower’. Once complete, the skyscraper will stand 905 feet in height, which will actually make it the second shortest of the site’s original quartet – the tallest will be the North Tower, at 1,337 feet, followed by the 950-foot Equinox Tower, while the Diller Scofidio + Renfro residential building will be the shortest, at 844 feet.

Heavy machinery is omnipresent around the site, and equipment for construction extends well beyond the excavation area, spilling onto 30th Street and 10th Avenue. Per David Childs – in a fantastic and informative video on mixed-use development, via the Center for Architecture – construction is also beginning on the Equinox Tower, though the vast scope of the existing railyards denies visible confirmation.

No tenant has been announced for the North Tower, but with Related’s subsidized rents, it’s only a matter of time before a major company like Time Warner chooses the tower as a headquarters. Of The Hudson Yards’ two major office buildings, The South Tower is currently aiming for completion in 2015, while the North Tower is expected to be occupied in 2018.
