New Hotel Coming to 1205 Broadway

Virgin Hotels has announced intentions to enter the New York market, and the brand’s first foray into Manhattan is expected to open in 2016. The specified location – the northwest corner of 29th Street and Broadway – is currently occupied by 1205 Broadway, a squat, unfortunate box housing several businesses that hark back to the NoMAD of yesteryear, when the neighborhood was dominated by wig shops and fake perfume stores.

No designs have been released, and clearly 1205 Broadway is still standing, but the future hotel will have at least 300 rooms. That means it will be mid-sized, probably resulting in a 30-40 story tower.

The new Virgin Hotel is just one of several set to rise in the area – work is also beginning on a 21-story hotel at 32 West 29th Street, and at 11 East 31st Street, which will house a  Thompsons Hotel.

As photographed above, excavation for 32 West 29th Street – which is immediately across the street from 1205 Broadway – continues, and the project is the first of many marking a new Midtown hotel boom.
