Construction Update: 160 East 22nd Street

Toll Brothers City Living’s new project at 160 East 22nd Street has made significant progress since the last update – from May 1st – and the building’s cantilever is very pronounced. The tower is closing in on its final height, and 14 of 21 floors have now been completed. The superstructure remains naked with no progress evident on the building’s cladding. Per the official website, the facade will eventually be comprised of Indiana limestone.

The building’s architect is Perkins Eastman, and 160 East 22nd Street keeps with Toll Brothers’ recent spate of contextually-minded developments, including The Touraine and The Pier at Brooklyn Bridge Park. The architecture of 160 East 22nd is slightly more forward-thinking – after all, the tower does employ a 25-foot cantilever – but the limestone facade will act as a visual link between the new development and Gramercy’s historic past.

160 East 22nd Street is located at the crossroads of several neighborhoods, but Gramercy would be the most accurate description – the Flatiron begins just to the west, and NoMad to the northwest. Several new projects are in various stages of development nearby, but the most prominent will be Eichner’s rumored 800-foot tower at 43 East 22nd Street, designed by Kohn Pederson Fox, and 400 Park Avenue South, which is also a Toll Brothers project.
