Construction Update: 220 Central Park South

Machinery is on-site at 220 Central Park South, which is about to enter the excavation phase of development. The site saw an extremely long and drawn out battle between Extell and Vornado, which ultimately resulted in Vornado acquiring one of Extell’s adjacent lots — as well as the parking garage Barnett bought under the original Central Park South — for $194 million.

With digging almost underway, it seems that work at Vornado’s tower could be completed before construction is finished at 217 West 57th Street, which will be several hundred feet taller. Permits for the demolition of the former 220 Central Park South’s parking garage were also issued this month.

At 920 feet, 220 Central Park South will still be one of the tallest buildings in Midtown, only slightly shorter than One57. Though renderings have not been released, it seems likely that development will follow a two-towered configuration similar to 15 Central Park West, and completion is likely by 2016.
