Revealed: Brookfield’s Residential Tower at Manhattan West

EDIT: Brookfield sent along a new image of the tower, which has shrunk significantly from the rendering initially posted, which was outdated. The new version will not verge on supertall status, instead standing shorter than either of the office towers.

Brookfield has released the first rendering of its residential tower that will rise as part of Manhattan West, and — more than anything else — it looks tall. While no height figures have been revealed, Brookfield had previously stated the building would rise over 60 floors; as-depicted, the skyscraper could verge on ‘supertall’ status, as a floor count indicates it will stand over 80 stories.

SOM appears to be the architect of record, and the design is definitely different from other projects currently underway in the Hudson Yards. Given that Related’s project has seen several major revisions as it has come closer to realization, changes are also possible at Manhattan West — though, of the site’s components, plans for the residential tower definitely appear to be furthest along. The image comes on the heels of additional reveals spotted by Curbed, earlier this month.

SOM’s reveal is hopefully a signal that the commercial towers remain closer to massing models than actual designs. The two office giants will be vast, but current plans are for relatively plain glass boxes — and given Brookfield’s competition across 10th Avenue, a stellar design would seem to be warranted.

Gothamist has a video that illustrates the current phase of Manhattan West, which is the construction of the deck; afterwards, in 2015, the actual towers will rise. With the potential for three supertalls looking likely, the site’s future impact on the skyline looks more impressive than ever.
