Renderings have been revealed of the new 26,000-square-foot Statue of Liberty Museum to be located on Liberty Island in New York Harbor. The structure is designed by FXFOWLE Architects. As reported over the summer, ESI Design will be responsible for the interior spaces. The museum will include a gallery, a theater, a bookstore, and administrative offices. It will also sport a walk-up rooftop terrace accessible from the pedestrian plaza.

A groundbreaking ceremony was held yesterday for the project and opening is expected in 2019, Yahoo News reported. About $40 million of the project’s estimated $70 million cost has been raised. The National Parks Service (NPS) maintains the entire island.

  1. Go at water with me and Statue Of Liberty, I can stay on space while I breathe fresh air. (love it)

  2. Maybe it’s just me, but I find it a bit disturbing that everybody at the new pavilion will be viewing the back of Lady Liberty as if she has turned her back to them. On the other hand, the visitors are seeing the same view as is she – lifting her hand before the golden door. Six of one, half a dozen of the other, I guess.

    • Indeed, that rear-end-focused AXIALITY is not at all a proper or competent move. Goes to the DIY ‘amateurism’ palpable in this whole project..

  3. Hopefully anything valuable in this structure will be placed sufficiently above sea level, accounting for the likelihood of storm surges flooding this island. Looks like they’re elevating it by about 10 feet — which might be enough.

  4. love this project
