Glass Reaches the Rooftop Parapet of One Manhattan Square on the Lower East Side

Spotted a couple days ago, glass on the final section of One Manhattan Square, aka 252 South Street, has now reached the top of the 847-foot-tall tower, marking another major milestone of progress since work began back in 2015. Developed by Extell, and designed by Adamson Associates, it stands above the Lower East Side, and is directly adjacent to the Manhattan Bridge and the East River, along Cherry Street and Pike Slip.

YIMBY Visits One Manhattan Square As Full Completion Nears For The Lower East Side’s First Skyscraper

Few towers have as much separation from the rest of the Manhattan skyline as the Lower East Side’s One Manhattan Square. The building is without competition for views, rising 72 stories above one of New York’s most well-known neighborhoods. The next highest structure in its immediate vicinity is the Manhattan Bridge, which spans the East River into Brooklyn. Extell Development Company is responsible for the development, and Lendlease is responsible for construction.

Tower Crane Comes Down From One Manhattan Square As Exterior Work Nears Completion

Construction on the Lower East Side’s first legitimate skyscraper continues apace. When YIMBY last looked at 252 South Street, i.e. One Manhattan Square, the superstructure had reached its 80th floor, with topping-out officially occurring last September. Now, only a dozen floors of cladding remain before its exterior is complete. Extell Development is responsible for development, with Lendlease responsible for construction.

As the Lower Lower East Side continues to see additional proposals for new supertall towers, the neighborhood’s first legitimate skyscraper is approaching its topping-out, per the latest from Tectonic. Extell’s tower at 252 South Street, aka One Manhattan Square, is about ten floors away from its uppermost 72nd floor, which will stand 850 feet above the streets down below.
