Vision: Arquitectonica’s Design for Building 1, at Extell’s Riverside Center

As the very last Riverside South tower nears its opening day, the first Riverside Center tower at 21 West End Avenue is already topping-out, with construction also beginning on the second building at 1 West End Avenue. Architect Christian de Portzamparc designed the site masterplan, and each of its piecemeal components make some effort to conform to what was previously approved.

While both 1 and 21 West End Avenue are already under construction, the master plan’s “Building 1,” on the corner of West 61st Street and Riverside Boulevard, does not yet have an announced design. YIMBY has now obtained images showing Arquitectonica‘s submitted plans, which show two different versions, one of which features a dramatic sloped cantilever outwards towards the West Side Highway.

Riverside Center and the blocks to the south are quickly becoming the realm of ultra-contemporary architectural design. Projects rising in the vicinity include 625 West 57th Street and 606 West 57th Street, which is also being designed by Arquitectonica.

Another concept for 1 Riverside Center was created by Goldstein Hill & West, and includes information that the tower will stand 492 feet tall and hold 641 units, giving approximate indicators of the building’s expected size. The project will total over one million square feet, and two separate structures will rise out of a large podium.

Arquitectonica’s more angular plan would provide the far West Side with yet another attractive new skyscraper, and the prominence of the site will hopefully results in that proposal (or something equally exciting) being built. Riverside Center will be a significant mark on the skyline of the Upper West Side, but it will also be very visible from across the Hudson River, given nothing will obstruct the development when viewed from the west.

No formal completion date for Riverside Center’s full build-out has been announced, but with work on 1 and 21 West End already underway, construction on the project’s remaining portions should not be far behind (though the winner of the design competition for Building 1 is not yet known).
