Plans have been announced for 274 affordable housing units as part of a project entitled Chestnut Commons, in East New York. A rezoning shift pushed by the East New York Neighborhood Plan is mostly responsible for the site’s potential. The building will be affordable to households earning up to $51,540, with more than 80 units for households earning up to $25,770, including a set-aside for formerly homeless families and individuals.

The Department of Housing Preservation and Development (HPD) released details about the project, detailed a mix of studios, one, two and three-bedroom apartments. The affordability comes through the Extremely Low- and Low-Income Affordability (ELLA) program. The project will include permanent affordability, strongly pushed by the development team.

The building will also include room for a variety of community-oriented programming. There will be a 1000-seat school satellite campus for CUNY Kingsborough Community College, a Black Box Theater programmed by ARTS East New York, as well as additional community and recreational space.

Brooklyn Borough President Eric L. Adams, said of Chestnut Commons, “This kind of multi-purpose, community-driven approach to local development, as part of a rezoning process, is exactly the kind of model we should be replicating across the borough,”

The development is a joint venture between Mutual Housing Association of New York (MHANY) Management, the Urban Builders Collaborative, and the Cypress Hills Local Development Corporation (CHLDC).

The building will achieve a low carbon footprint by incorporating passive housing elements to reduce operational costs.

  2. Why are those SIMS people walking on the road where the ramp from the belt parkway intersects with Atlantic ave?

Do these bots ever see these areas in person before they make their renditions
