Zaha Hadid’s 520 West 28th Street Nears Completion, West Chelsea

With The High Line’s residential development boom entering its twilight, construction is just about complete on Related’s new condominium building at 520 West 28th Street, designed by Zaha Hadid Architects. The building, in the Western blocks of Chelsea, offers a truly refreshing take on residential architecture, and its sleek, futuristic design makes for an exciting new addition to the streetscape.

The project stands 11 floors to its rooftop, and within, the total construction area is just shy of 190,000 square feet. The building will have a little over 11,000 square feet of commercial-retail space in the ground floor, while the rest of the square footage will be divided amongst 39 condominiums, averaging a whopping 4,600 square feet apiece. Ismael Leyva Architects is the architect of record.

As the latest photography shows, the building is one of the few new developments in New York City that surpasses the renderings. The metallic envelope contrasts against the glassy exterior for a truly out-of-this-world combination that makes the development the most iconic new structure along The High Line.

Though it may stand far shorter than Related’s massive new office and residential towers rising just a few blocks to the north, at Hudson Yards, 520 West 28th Street is an equally substantive improvement to its own block, with the combination of retail and residential space — however extremely expensive — expanding upon the old buildings that formerly occupied the site.

The building is just about complete, and move-ins appear to have already begun.

USA Design: Stop watching TV and think about it; Arizona corner – Alabama corner – California corner – Colorado corner – Maine corner – Michigan corner – Montana corner – Nevada corner – Texas corner – Washington corner – Virginia corner – Wyoming corner. (Some inspirations behind your new ideas or creations to make development different next time – I have to go back my grave and I love you YIMBY – Thank you so much. ((^_^))

  2. Now, this is what “WOW” looks like…if only the truly underwhelming, banal buildings taking shape a few blocks north in Hudson Yards had even half the “Wow” of Zaha Hadid’s masterpiece on West 28th there might be something to get excited about for that group of buildings now rising…

This building definitely makes a STATEMENT a good STATEMENT. Its a shame that Zaha Hadid passed away.

  4. It’s surpassingly ugly! A hideous defacement (perhaps the worst of many) to the High Line. Cannot believe the emperor’s-new-clothes reactions here. Hate to break it you, folks — he’s naked.
