Construction of Dual-Brand Marriott Moves Forward at 338 West 36th Street, Midtown Manhattan

Rendering of 338 West 36th Street

New York hotelier Sam Chang and Marriott International partnered in 2016 to introduce several new ground up hotels around the city. Now, construction on one of two dual-branded properties has picked up between Eighth and Ninth avenues, at 338 West 36th Street.

Upon completion, the 28-story property will include a 286-key Marriott Fairfield Inn & Suites and a 280-key Marriott SpringHill Suites.

SoHo-based Gene Kaufman Architect has again partnered with Chang and will oversee design of the Marriott hotels.

The hotels will share a lobby, a fitness center, meeting areas, a bar and lounge, as well as guest dining areas. In total, the property will comprise 191,000 square feet.

A portion of the building’s enclosure repurposes the facade of a 110-year-old church that previously occupied the build-site. The most recent renderings from the developer depict large arched windows and brick masonry spanning a portion of the lower level podium, with the hotel tower rising above.

Completion is expected in 2019, following nearly two years of construction and fit out.

  1. Please pardon me for using your space: Italy agrees on details – design – decided on developments. (I said)

  2. Let’s just say there are better ways to preserve a facade.

  3. Kaufman is officially the worst architect to have ever practiced in NYC. We will be living with him abominations for a long time.

  4. I can’t understand how Kaufman isn’t bored senseless with his own cookie-cutter designs. Is he too stupid or too lazy or both?

  5. Yet another lazy piece of trash to come from the pen of Gene Kaufman.

How to save a facade and destroy everything around it. Is this some sort of spite?

  7. I’m not quite sure what I am looking at in this rendering. Is that a Potamkin Village facade completely detached from the modern building? And with what looks like four stories of particle board above it? Good grief!!!!

  8. It’s bizarre, the rendering looks as if the sad fragment of facade will be a freestanding wall enclosing a courtyard with a hideous towering brown screen looming overhead. Considering how lousy the hotel design is, it would have been merciful to just demolish the church facade. This is a joke. Kaufman is a joke. That is not how one utilizes and incorporates an historic facade into ones design.

  9. Pure rubbish. When is Marriott going to realize that it builds the ugliest hotels in NYC? And that it is damaging its brand as well?

    • Yeah I gotta say I probably would’nt pay more than $50 a night at something like this, it’s like a 20 story onestar hostel.
