YIMBY recently went on a hard hat tour of Brooklyn Point, aka 138 Willoughby Street, in Downtown Brooklyn. At 720 feet high and 68 stories, the reinforced concrete skyscraper is currently the tallest tower in all of Brooklyn, as well as the third and final phase of the City Point complex. Kohn Pedersen Fox is the designer of the new building, while SLCE Architects is serving as the architect of record. The rising glass curtain wall is crossing the halfway mark and will soon enclose the entire edifice in a staggered pattern of double-height glass and white-colored rectangular frames. AD 100 designer Katherine Newman is designing interior spaces. The first closings for the studio to three-bedroom units are expected to begin in early 2020, with pricing starting at $850,000. Coveted New York-based developer Extell is working on other massive projects like One Manhattan Square and Central Park Tower, New York’s current tallest skyscraper by roof height and the tallest residential building in the Western Hemisphere.

Photos from the upper floors of Brooklyn Point show a wide extent of New York City’s skyline and the emerging Brooklyn cityscape.

“As the tallest building in the borough, Brooklyn Point represents a milestone for Brooklyn,” said Ari Alowan Goldstein, senior vice president of development at Extell. “The Brooklyn marketplace now competes with Manhattan and has significant demand for Extell quality homes. We are experiencing tremendous success because our buyers appreciate the value of outstanding design, amenities, and unparalleled views coupled with the savings of a 25-year tax abatement.”

“At Brooklyn Point, we wanted to honor the creative spirit of Brooklyn, while crafting a new landmark for the borough’s downtown,” said KPF design principal Rob Whitlock. “To that end, we picked up on the diversity of scale and texture of the site’s context in the building’s expression. Brooklyn Point features a sculptural façade, with an eclectic materiality that plays with light and shadow, giving the tower an elegant solidity.”

Amenities will span over 40,000 square feet and include the highest residential infinity pool in the Western Hemisphere. The angled shape of the skyscraper’s crown will allow swimmers and sunbathers on the adjacent landscaped sundeck to peer through the edge of the building and enjoy expansive views of Lower Manhattan, Midtown, Williamsburg, and Downtown Brooklyn. The exterior space will also contain al fresco dining areas, changing rooms, showers, and an outdoor movie screen. Down below, in the podium floors of the complex will be a health and wellness facility with a 65-foot-long indoor saltwater pool, a 35-foot-high indoor rock climbing wall, a yoga studio, a pilates and cycling studio, a squash and basketball court, a spa with an infrared sauna, men’s and women’s steam rooms, and a hot tub.

The entertainment spaces will be in the Park Lounge, a triple-height area that will house a signature bar, a salon, a fireplace, a co-working room, a chef’s demonstration kitchen, a wine library, a game lounge, a screening room and performance room, a private study, and a children’s playroom.

Rounding out the list of amenities is a ninth-floor outdoor space designed by Mathews Nielsen Landscape Architects. This will come with al fresco dining seating areas, gas grills, a fire pit, lounge areas, a terrace bar, and a playground for children called “Forest Adventure.” The ground floor will sit among nearly 600,000 square feet of retail, dining, and entertainment selections at City Point, including more than 40 food vendors at DeKalb Market Hall, stores like Century 21, Target, and Trader Joe’s, and the Alamo Drafthouse movie theater.

Access to the B, D, N, Q, R, and W train at the DeKalb Avenue subway station along Flatbush Avenue is also conveniently located on the ground floor of City Point.

Brooklyn Point is expected to be completed early next year.
