Design firm Z Architecture has revealed new renderings of its six-story mixed-use building currently under construction at 1259 Bedford Avenue in Bedford-Stuyvesant, Brooklyn. Tower Real Estate Investments with developer Michael Reihanian filed permits earlier this month for the corner property that will eventually comprise 47,445 square feet.

As previously reported by YIMBY, building components will include 31,126 square feet of residential space and 5,176 square feet for unspecified commercial use. With a total of 46 apartments, the average residence should measure approximately 676 square feet. Illustrations from the design team show a simple, light-colored brick façade along Bedford Avenue. The exterior along Herkimer Street, however, incorporates cascading columns of oversized windows that gradually extend into a modest cantilever above street level. Each floor along this edge is visually distinguished by bronze-colored, horizontal beams that protrude from the building’s edge.

The new development will replace a long-vacant religious structure and a small commercial business. An estimated date of completion has not been released.

  1. Specially looked at cascading columns, point at property which I begin. It has an advantage over others in a design according to I looked at, not moving in a rendering. But it does the class of modern ideas very well. (Thanks to YIMBY)

  2. Looks like 7 stories to me

  3. On July 7th YIMBY published an article that stated “Permits have been filed for a six-story mixed-use building at 1259 Bedford Avenue” and describes it as proposed, meanwhile this article states “currently under construction at 1259 Bedford Avenue “. Can you clarify as to the actual status?

  4. How many of those apartments Will be allocated for affordable housing tenants? As you already know projects like these only help push out. Long standing residents.

  5. Mae, explain your logic. It says the current building is vacant. Who’s to say people moving in won’t be “long standing residents”? I can say, they will probably be upstanding residents which is what the area really needs.

    • Thank you Kaheem ! You’re absolutely right. These vacant crumbling buildings are an eye sore in Bed Stuy. I’m hoping more of them get knocked down to build new apartment buildings, bring in new residents, and revitalize parts of the neighborhood.

  6. As a resident that lives on this block and has for a number of years the construction management is a horrific. Trash and rats everywhere under the scaffolding of the construction site. The trash is so bad that you can’t even walk down that portion of the sidewalk. Between the smell and the rats that place is a mess. These new condo construction sites make it miserable for the neighborhood. It’s no wonder that nobody welcomes these lack luster, poorly designed, lifeless buildings.
