Excavation Continues for 33-Story Hotel at 255 West 34th Street in Midtown

Excavation is moving along at 255 West 34th Street, a new 33-story, 330-room hotel just across from One Penn Plaza. The Chetrit Group is developing the Midtown site with Stonehill & Taylor Architects as the architect of record. Meanwhile a new rendering for the 155,594-square-foot development has been posted at the construction site, which is situated along the southern edge of the Garment District.

New photos show the state of progress since several old low-rise buildings were demolished and the site was cleared.

The main rendering shows a podium section with a two-story grid and frame of rectangular street-facing open-air voids that offer views of West 34th Street. Retail and office components will occupy the cellar, first, and second floors. Above is a setback and an even tighter grid of floor-to-ceiling windows that slightly protrude from the walls of the hotel. A cantilever on the western elevation extends outward, but within the property footprint. This cantilever is positioned between the podium and the hotel floors and within what looks like the mechanical floors of the structure, as shown with the tall, narrow row of dark, rectangular-shaped voids.

YIMBY last reported that the lowest five floors will feature a fitness center, a library, an outdoor pool, a terrace, meeting rooms, storage rooms, administrative offices, and a restaurant.

Excavation should likely continue until near the end of the year, while foundation work should commence sometime in the winter, followed by the rise of the superstructure throughout 2020. 255 West 34th Street’s close proximity to Penn Station should make it a very convenient lodging option for tourists and visitors. Access to the A, C, and E trains can be found at the 34th Street-Penn Station subway stop right outside the main lobby, while the 1, 2, and 3 trains are half a block away to the east. The B, D, F, M, N, Q, R, and W trains are a seven-minute walk to the east at Herald Square.

Completion of 255 West 34th Street is posted on the construction fence for summer 2021.

  1. What a terrible waste of a prime site.

  2. Insignificant…utilitarian architecture

  3. Is the cantilever becoming the hallmark of the air rights era in Manhattan architecture?
