Excavation Begins for Bjarke Ingel’s Office Tower at 3 West 29th Street in NoMad

Excavation and foundation work on 29th & 5th, Bjarke Ingels Group‘s proposed skyscraper at 3 West 29th Street, gets deeper below the streets of NoMad. A number of excavators and piling machines are actively digging and inserting long metal pilings into the earth at the site, which is just five blocks south of the Empire State Building and almost on the centerline of the 88-year-old Art Deco icon. BIG’s project is being developed by HFZ Capital Group and is slated to rise 551 feet tall and 34 stories.

Photos looking through and above the construction fence show the state of activity. The length of the site running east to west gives a good indication of how wide of a footprint the upcoming edifice will have.

The NoMad skyscraper will yield a total of 300,000 square feet and incorporate shear glass walls and staggered outdoor terraces along the eastern elevation. The rendering below is a view looking south toward Lower Manhattan and gives a depiction of the stacked terraces.

29th & 5th is close to a number of subways including the R and W trains at the 28th Street-Broadway station to the west, and the B, D, F, M, N, Q, and PATH trains to the north at Herald Square. Madison Square Park, Eataly, and a number of great dining options in the Flatiron District are a short walk to the south, while a large quantity of cafes, food halls, and restaurants in Koreatown are only three streets to the north on West 32nd Street.

29th & 5th is slated to be completed in the spring of 2023, as indicated on the construction fence post.

  1. Very odd that the second rendering uses a Lower Manhattan pic that is nearly ten years old. Otherwise, this looks pretty decent, imo.

  2. Wait the impact on the view north from downtown is going to be very bad… if you’ve ever been in the upper floors of the WTC, the view of the empire state building is now going to be blocked by this unremarkable office building. Any one else see a lot of very nice views being ruined because of this?

    • The renderings make it look taller than 551 feet. If it’s really 551, then it shouldn’t block views so badly.

    • The building in question here is on the east side of 5th Avenue? Do you know which side of ESB is on…. One World Trade is slightly southwest of this building location, views of ESB are uneffected. You don’t know what you’re talking about… #oknimby

    • I think the 100’s of new high rise buildings that were developed over the past 30 years have blocked views in some way. I don’t understand you people who complain about this when the main reason NYC is such a well known place is because of all these massive buildings; it’s inevitable and I’m sure there will be many more to come.

  3. Ok, please tell me how THIS building is seen as an achievement and should be flaunted. I am on board with the yimby principle,(build more housing/increase supply) but we have to realize that urban and architectural beauty is actually objective, and these monolithic glass fortresses must be stopped.

  4. A failed, mediocre slab from BIG blocking views of the Empire State Building. Pathetic.

  5. Can we get a rendering that is scaled accurately? Both of these obviously aren’t.

    • For comparison, in the first rendering the building with the white facade to the right of ESB is Tower 31 apartment building which is approximately 450′. The building here is expected to be 550′, taller than Tower 31 but, less than half of the height of the Empire State Building. Going back to my previous reply @Tom, what are you talking about?

  6. Wow is that plain, awkward, boring and yes, no doubt, it will interfere with the views in a very unfortunate way.
