Installation of the sculptural windows on Thomas Heatherwick‘s Highline residential project Lantern House is moving along at 515 West 18th Street in Chelsea. Almost all of the bulbous windows are in place on the shorter ten-story structure, with only the portion behind the exterior mechanical hoist awaiting completion. Meanwhile, the windows are gradually ascending the taller 21-story reinforced concrete structure between the perimeter of hand-laid brick walls. Related Companies is the developer and SLCE Architects is the architect of record for the project.

The property is situated on Tenth Avenue between West 18th Street and West 19th Street, adjacent to Frank Gehry’s IAC Building. Lantern House sits astride the High Line near one of the most photographed sections of the elevated park south of Hudson Yards.

Photos from street level show the state of construction. Much of the protective film on the glass of the ten-story building facing Tenth Avenue has been peeled off, offering a preview of the project’s final look.

  1. Design travesty. Simply mind blowing somebody green lit this design for people to actually buy and live inside.

  2. “Bulbous windows” is an accurate description of this ‘one trick pony’ actually they look more like hand-grenades than windows..but let’s be fair we’ll wait until people move in and these ‘widows’ start lighting up…maybe it will work then, let’s see.

  3. They look like stacked hand grenades.

  4. It’s a bit too much…like binge-ing on caviar 🙂 Could be tolerable as an accent wall or something more humble…

  5. This development is amazing. What a unique project. Sorry you guys are so miserable…
