In October, the city’s Public Design Commission voted to erect a large monument within Central Park honoring Sojourner Truth, Susan B. Anthony, and Elizabeth Cady Stanton as pioneers in support of women’s rights. The project team now returns to the Landmark Preservation Commission to request the removal of seven benches immediately in front of the monument and newly revealed text honoring the three historic figures.

Designed by artist Meredith Bergmann, the bronze statue sits atop a granite plinth with an overall height of 14 feet. The fully capitalized text will be etched at the rear of the plinth and will read “This monument has been donated to the city of New York by the monumental women’s statue fund, an all-volunteer, non-profit group dedicated to increasing knowledge of the importance of women’s history. The dedication of the monument is scheduled for August 26, 2020, the 100th anniversary of the ratification of the 19th ‘Votes for Women’ Amendment to the United States constitution.”

Completion of the statue is valued at $1.5 million and was exclusively provided by Monumental Women’s Statue Fund. The organization coordinated one thousand individual donations, private contributions from the Ford Foundation, New York Life, and American Express, in addition to proceeds generated from cookie sales by Girl Scout Troops 3484 and 3482 of the Girl Scouts Club of America.

The final work will be dedicated in the southern boundary of Central Park’s Literary Walk in August 2020.

  1. What a waste

  2. Not a very attractive image. These women were icons. Why not hire a better artist?
