Work is steadily progressing on the red brick curtain wall of 555 West 22nd Street, a 26-story condominium building in Chelsea. Designed by Robert A. M. Stern Architects and developed by Related Companies with SLCE Architects as the architect of record, the nearly 300-foot-tall reinforced concrete superstructure stands right across from the Hudson River and Hudson River Park. The 250,000-square-foot project will yield 141 units, averaging around 2,245 square feet apiece.

Recent photos show the rising envelope and cinderblock formation for the grid of windows. Some of the metal clips are attached to the edges of the floors plates and will eventually hold a portion of the perimeter walls.

Below is a closer look at the subtly detailed running bond patterns. The choice of brick is unconventional for Robert A. M. Stern Architects, whose hallmark design element is the use of limestone for the façades, as seen on skyscrapers like 30 Park Place, 520 Park Avenue, and 220 Central Park South.

The main elevation of 555 West 22nd Street runs along the western end of the property between West 21st Street and West 22nd Street and has a symmetrical massing and stepped crown.

A view from across the Hudson River shows the presence of 555 West 22nd Street in line with other equally tall structures to the north and south of the property.

Not much has been revealed about the interiors and residential units, but proposed amenities include a residential lounge, an event room, a game center, a business center, a fitness center, a basement pool with lockers, bicycle storage, and a dog spa. A select number of homes will come with private outdoor terraces found along the multiple setbacks.

Construction on 555 West 22nd Street will likely be completed sometime next year.

  1. Disappointing, that close up reveals some really shoddy brick work. Those lines should be straight and crisp. Looks like the brick layers should refrain from those martini lunches.

  2. Brick here looks more labor intensive than Limestone would be..Let’s see the final result.

  3. The main elevation of 555 West 22nd Street runs along the western end of the property between West 21st Street and West 22nd Street
That is incorrect it runs between 23rd St. And 22nd St.

  4. Looks really well
