Construction Wraps on Vandewater at 543 West 122nd Street in Morningside Heights

Vandewater, designed by Incorporated Architecture & Design and developed by Savanna

The exterior of Vandewater appears complete while work continues inside the 33-story residential tower at 543 West 122nd Street in Morningside Heights. The 385-foot-tall structure is designed by INC Architecture & Design and developed by Savanna, with SLCE Architects as the executive architect and Michael Van Valkenburgh Associates, Inc. as the landscape architect. Halstead Development Marketing is handling sales for the 183 condominiums.

Recent photos from Tectonic show the building fully clad in its Art Deco-inspired curtain wall that harkens back to the golden era of New York skyscrapers. The site is located between Broadway and Amsterdam Avenue and is a close walk to Riverside Church and Riverside Park. The property is also a short distance from Columbia University and the Cathedral of St. John The Divine, both of which are located to the south.

The homes range from studios starting at $920,000 to four-bedroom residences for $6 million. Vandewater will also yield 24,000 square feet of indoor and outdoor residential amenities that include a cobblestone motor court, a 24-hour attended lobby, concierge service by Luxury Attache, a salon, great room, and club room. Other features include a fitness center curated by The Wright Fit with a quiet energy room, a 70-foot-long lap pool, a pet spa, a practice room, a children’s playroom, a private outdoor dining terrace, and landscaped gardens. The closest subway station from the property is the 125th Street station, serviced by the 1 train, two blocks to the north.

YIMBY last reported that closings are expected to occur this summer, while total completion is expected in early 2021.

  1. Vandewater is very sharp and clean and is a excellent representation of classic New York City architecture from the last century. Overall, this a pretty good building.

  2. The building is hideous. The windows appear to bear crosses. It is totally out of scale with Morningside Heights which apparently will continue to grow up higher and higher obscuring neighborhood views of Riverside Church. Most shocking and disturbing is the price of apartments starting at $920,000 for a studio with no consideration of low and middle income housing. Shameful.

This skyscraper looks just great at night. It does indeed echo the lighting of some of the greatest skyscrapers of the ’20s and ’30s: 60 Wall Tower, Chanin, NY Central, and of course the ESB.

totally disgusting. Why? for whom? We need affordable housing of reasonable height. I hope it remains empty. I live under it’s shadow on my gardens. Thanks a lot JTS.

    • Are you sure you’re on the right forum? Even luxury development will benefit affordable housing in the long run. And reasonable height? What height do you consider reasonable? This is Manhattan we’re talking about, a haven for skyscrapers. The taller, the better.

    • Ur pt is respected. Adforsable xould have been an option but the site is valuable and will draw great interest. Its next to top school. Train. Social life. And just far enough to smoke a joint outaide without a worry.

Its a great play on affordable low high end housing. Ideal for the millenial or professor outpriced by other harlem oe downtown units.

The interesting question ia can another builsing of this scale go up in the coming yrs withour affordable attaxhed?

  7. Totally out of scale for Morningside Heights. Columbia keeps every building under ten stories, then they build this.

  8. Looks like a hulking Gotham office building right out of dystopian 1984. All it needs now is the Bat Signal beacon light above it.
