The XI’s Travertine Façade Continues Installation in Chelsea

The XI. Designed by Bjarke Ingels Group.

Installation of the warm-colored travertine façade is continuing on The XI, a twisting pair of 36- and 26-story residential structures at 76 Eleventh Avenue in Chelsea. Designed by Danish architect Bjarke Ingels of Bjarke Ingels Group and developed by HFZ Capital Group, the 908,250-square-foot complex stands along the Hudson River waterfront just west of the High Line. The project will yield 236 condominiums and a 137-room Six Senses Hotel Resort Spa, the first location in the United States. Omnibuild is in charge of the construction and Douglas Elliman is handling sales and marketing.

Most of the thin travertine slabs are already in place on the western profile of the taller edifice along West Street, while more segments are going up on the bottom of the northern elevation. The exterior hoist is attached to the twisting reinforced concrete superstructure, with the surrounding openings still awaiting the final window panels and metal frames. The mechanical units atop the roof parapet are visible and will eventually be enclosed in an opaque white envelope, as depicted in previous renderings and in the featured image above.

Recent photos from across the Hudson River show the prominent height of The XI over Chelsea. The shorter sibling stands immediately to the east and is not too far behind on external progress.

Eighty-seven of the units are being designed by Gilles & Boissier, while 149 residences will see interiors by Gabellini Sheppard. Prices range from $2,575,000 to $14,500,000.

YIMBY last reported that The XI is slated to be completed by the end of the year.

  1. For some reason, The XI just looks kinda charming and look like a great pair of a brother and a sister.

  2. Two more buildings from the Planet Krypton School of Architecture.

    Cold and soulless.

  3. Named after Chinese President?

  4. I am not a Bjarke Ingels fan. His creations disturb me. This particular twist gives me an anxiety. Not to mention the name of the development. I guess it is named after the Greek letter and not the Chinese dictator.

  5. Good guesses, but I’m almost 100% sure that XI is intended to be the Roman numeral for the number 11, and it is a reference to the development’s location, Eleventh Avenue, not to the Greek letter or the Chinese president, neither of which have anything to do with this development.

  6. It’s one thing to design a building that’s intricate, it’s another to design one without any symmetry. Without the benefit of seeing it in three-dimensional real life, it’s uncomfortable. Indeed, it’s the opposite of camouflage. Rather than blending in, it sticks out awkwardly.
