A 22-story Hyatt Centric hotel in Midtown, Manhattan is on track to open this summer according to a recent update from the project team. The new building is located at 16 East 39th Street and will debut as Hyatt Centric 39th & 5th once a Certificate of Occupancy is issued by the Department of Buildings.

Designed by Gene Kaufman Architect and developed by McSam Hotel Group, the 244-foot-tall building comprises approximately 77,858 square feet. The hospitality component includes 162 guest rooms accompanied by a curated collection of modern artwork throughout. Hotel amenities will include a rooftop lounge and a ground-floor restaurant with indoor and outdoor seating area.

The façade is primarily comprised of reflective glass with dark metal supports. At the ground floor, the lobby is enclosed in typical floor-to-ceiling windows, a large glass awning, and pin metal signage.

  1. Stupid pointless setback

  2. It seems like there is finally a arguably not offensive building coming from Kaufman’s office, but the room interiors as depicted are terrifying…is it possible that Kaufman has the worst taste of anyone working in NY in the design industry?

  3. Another miserable effort by the city’s prolific hack Gene Kaufman. It should be illegal to do such lasting damage to the urban context. Just retire already, and make sure that everyone who works for you picks a different profession.

    • I was actually thinking, wow Gene, this is a marked improvement over anything else I’ve ever seen from you. Still not gold-standard compared to other architects, but give the man some credit… he’s done way worse!

    The 80s have returned!
I can’t believe I suspected this was another Kaufman abortion before opening the article.

  5. Per Hyatt Centric 39th & 5th website: Now accepting reservations for stays from January 3, 2021 and beyond. They were scheduled for a summer 2020 opening before the pandemic hit. Most closed Hyatt branded hotels in NYC are not expected to reopen until Aug. 1st at the earliest and others have been pushing their re-openings to mid August or early Sept (prior to that most had a May 15th, then June 1st, then July 1st re-open date).

another glass box, do we really need another Hyatt in N.Y.C. I mean its not the that great of a chain to start with…….

  7. Based on the state of progress shown in this picture the chances of this project opening this summer are less than 0.
