The Landmarks Preservation Commission has approved the construction of a new penthouse roof deck at 107 East 64th Street in the Upper East Side Historic District. Designed by Pleskow Architects, the project will move forward once the commissioners issue a final Certificate of Appropriateness.

The existing single-family townhouse stands five stories tall and was originally built around 1882 by architects W.P. & A.M. Parsons. Since that time, the interiors have been renovated and altered to suit modern living. The most recent renovations took place between 2014 and 2017.

The rooftop volume will expand the building’s existing height from 57 feet to about 72 feet above ground, which includes a partially enclosed penthouse and an elevator shaft among other mechanical components.

The penthouse structure is referred to as a “roof lobby” and opens out into small planted terrace with a hinged and operable glass window wall. The chimneys and exhaust structures will be cased in red brick masonry and strategically placed to provide additional privacy for the occupant.

Construction is likely imminent.
