Construction has passed the halfway mark at 601 West 29th Street, a 695-foot-tall residential skyscraper in Hudson Yards and number 20 on our countdown of the tallest buildings under construction in New York. Referred to as “Tower A” in a two-building development along with the adjacent 606 West 30th Street, the 58-story structure is designed by FXCollaborative for Douglaston Development and sits along Eleventh Avenue on the border of West Chelsea.

New photographs looking east towards Related Companies’ massive Hudson Yards complex shows the reinforced concrete superstructure of 601 West 29th Street joining the dense and tall cluster of towers clad in a mixture of glass, stone, and metal.

Work has yet to begin on the curtain wall, which will be composed of floor-to-ceiling glass panels and white- and dark-colored mullions arranged in a large grid. No metal clips were spotted on the edges of the floor plates, so façade installation isn’t imminent and likely won’t commence until the reinforced concrete superstructure is closer to topping out. The main rendering shows only one major setback in the overall massing, so this should enable construction to continue at a steady pace.

Not much has been disclosed regarding the residential units and potential amenities. However, a major selling point is sure to be the panoramic views of Hudson Yards, Chelsea, Midtown, Lower Manhattan, and up and down the Hudson River.

601 West 29th Street is slated for completion in September 2023, as noted on the construction fence.

It will likely take years for the economy and overbuilt real estate market to recover.
Perhaps this enormous project should be called: – Hudson Yard Sale –

  2. I’m still not exactly sure about Tower A and B, but now looking at it in relation to the existing Hudson Yards skyline, I think Tower A could actually be pretty cool. Speaking of which, there are some really good photos by Michael Young here. So, I have to wait until construction gets a little bit more further along for me to put a good final verdict on this one. But so far, it looks allright.

  3. I’m a retired NY trial lawyer and no longer live in the City. But this doesn’t mean that I don’t keep tabs on what’s going on in NY. I haven’t yet noticed a design theme in the ongoing accumulation of buildings in Hudson Yards (what a lousy name, emblematic of what’s doing underground) other than the street grid and height, unlike Rockefeller Center and Tudor City. For those of you who live in the City, is there another common element in the style of the buildings? Thank you for a reply.

    • I’m assuming they didn’t want a central theme, but instead an eclectic assortment of buildings by internationally known starchitects. I’m undecided as to whether I prefer it this way, or if a campus theme would have been better. Hopefully phase II will bring smaller towers to the Western Yards to give it more depth.

And I personally love the name, Hudson Yards.

  4. Just wondering who the hell is going to rent them. NYCHA?

  5. Hudson Yards is going to become it’s own nation

  6. This building is too dense.
