Demolition could begin soon at 777 Eighth Avenue in Hell’s Kitchen, where a 27-story hotel has been proposed. From the prolific architect-developer duo of Gene Kaufman Architect and McSam Hotel Group, as well as additional owner TSGL 8th Avenue LLC, the building will rise from a 5,000-square-foot plot on the west side of the block between West 47th and 48th Streets, not far from Times Square.

Recent photos show that demolition activity has yet to begin on the distinctive red- and black-clad building, whose 50 feet of ground-floor frontage have been closed for much of 2020. The property formerly contained a theater and and a sightseeing company, for which a model of the Statue of Liberty stands on the centerline of the entranceway awning.

Demolition could possibly begin sometime this year at the address, which features a maximum total of 50,000 square feet of as-of-right buildable square footage. The hotel will join the rising crop of hospitality projects around Times Square, including the Hotel RIU Plaza New York to the south at 305 West 46th Street, the InterContinental New York Times Square hotel at 300 West 44th Street, and two upcoming Gene Kaufman-designed hotels at 305 West 48th Street and 223 West 46th Street. The nearest subway is the C train at the 50th Street subway station, while the N, R, and W trains are also nearby at the 49th Street station on Seventh Avenue.

A start and completion date for the demolition and construction of the new 777 Eighth Avenue has not been announced yet.

  1. God help us all.

  2. At least it’s a great address, 777 Eighth Avenue.

  3. This address deserves an iconic high rise… not the trash that’s expected to rise here.

    More’s the pity.

  4. Prolific? Definitely, and they’re all horrific too.

  5. Let’s see, that’s 3 of these Kaufman eyesores U/C,
    West 46th, 47th and now 48th…

    Guess 49th is next? ?

    STOP THE MADDNESS,
    STOP THE MEDIOCRITY,
STOP THE FUTURE BLIGHT TO NY!!

  6. Can we please just banish Kauman x McSam from the island of Manhattan for the love of God?

  7. Terrible idea to start another one of these cheapo hotels now. McSam has glutted that end of the market, and it will not end well for them. Their reuse of the same basic GK “design” with some new, schlocky ornamentation has worn out its welcome. Begone.

He works because he charges the least amount per square foot than any other in town, right or wrong those looking for for low PRICE AND NO TASTE FLOCK TO HIM..

  9. These ugly money laundering factories have destroyed the skyline. Whose fault is it? Can they not be stopped? The billionaire developers who oppose immigration love selling to Russians and Saudis to launder their money almost as much as they love taking advantage of undocumented immigrants to work for lowest wages.
