The transformation of the City Square commercial complex in White Plains, New York will soon include a new outdoor sculpture from Bulgarian artist Georgi Minchev. Titled “Fragments of Something Bigger,” the steel teardrop sculpture will stand nearly 18 feet tall in front of 50 Main Street.

Located at the gateway to downtown White Plains, 50 Main Street at City Square is owned and managed by Ginsburg Development Companies (GDC). For the better part of a decade, GDC has overseen a multi-phased transformation on the commercial complex, formerly known as the Westchester Financial Center.

Minchev was selected through an international competition hosted by ArtsWestchester. Out of 36 submissions, three sculptors were designated as finalists and awarded an honorarium. Each finalist produced a scaled model of their proposal and Minchev was eventually selected as the winning participant.

“We are delighted to partner with ArtsWestchester in bringing exciting public artwork to our development in downtown White Plains,” said GDC principal Martin Ginsburg. “This remarkable sculpture is yet another example of our ongoing commitment to showcasing world-class artwork at our commercial and residential developments.”

In addition to the modernization of 50 Main Street, the scope of redevelopment includes the renovation and repositioning of an office building at 1 Martine Avenue for residential use. The property will house 188 rental apartments and is expected to open this spring. The project pipeline also includes new restaurant and retail space along Main Street and the creation of City Square Park, a private outdoor roof deck atop a parking garage that connects all buildings in City Square. The park was recently completed and includes water features, walking paths, a putting green, and outdoor dining.

According to GDC and ArtsWestchester, future installations will focus on regional artists from Hudson Valley and the surrounding Westchester area.

Why? It didn’t hurt anyone. It was just a dude working. Unless there’s a reason that I’m not aware of. And why change the city’s name? What do you suggest?
