Construction has topped out on the three-story expansion of Tiffany & Co.’s flagship store at 727 Fifth Avenue in Midtown. Designed by OMA partners Shohei Shigematsu and Jake Forster, the project also involves a full interior overhaul of the 71-year-old structure, which is located at the corner of Fifth Avenue and East 57th Street. When complete, the building will stand ten stories tall.

The last beam, signed and appropriately colored Tiffany Blue with the jewelry company’s name on the steel, was hoisted into place in late January. This milestone came after a double-crane lift, the fourth of its kind to occur in New York City, that was needed to help assemble the new upper superstructure. Exterior portions of the original building’s fenestration have been boarded up and a mechanical hoist has been installed on the northern elevation. A strip of scaffolding with Tiffany & Co.’s name and its Tiffany Blue background color stands on the western elevation. The same aesthetic is seen on the sidewalk scaffolding.

The steel framework will soon be enclosed in a glass curtain wall with a flat roof parapet. An outdoor terrace space will surround the addition and serve as as exhibition, event, and clienteling space. A perimeter of shrubbery will outline the setback of the original roof line, as depicted in the renderings. We could expect to see the first vertically textured panels arrive this spring.

Tiffany & Co. has temporarily relocated its flagship to an adjacent storefront at 6 East 57th Street until completion of the construction project, which is planned for spring 2022.

  1. Looking forward to seeing the remodel on my next visit, and plan to have “breakfast” in the cafe! I like the Tiffany blue lighting of the glass panels on the addition. Nice touch.

Wonder how the remodel was approved, considering it involved blocking 3 floors of windows of TWITTLER TOWER next door?! Am surprised 45 didn’t sue Tiffany to stop construction?!

  2. I hope it really turns out like the renderings. The old and the new fit together seamlessly and perfectly. I also kind of like the idea of the Tiffany Blue beam.

  3. This isn’t that much of an expansion since they removed an older 3 floor extension to build a new larger one.
