Finishing Touches Underway on 305 West 48th Street in Hell’s Kitchen, Manhattan

Work is wrapping up on 305 West 48th Street, a 27-story hotel in the Midtown, Manhattan neighborhood of Hell’s Kitchen. Designed by Gene Kaufman Architects and developed by Bright Management with Rockwell Group as the interior designer, 303-foot-tall tower will yield 73,000 square feet, with 211 guest rooms spread across 59,000 square feet. The site is located at the corner of West 48th Street and Eighth Avenue, a short walk from Times Square and the Theater District. Joy Construction is the general contractor for the building.

Since our last update in January, construction has concluded on the upper portion of the building, with the exception of the enclosure around the water towers.

The last major section of 305 West 48th Street awaiting completion is the podium facing West 48th Street. A half-finished canopy currently hangs over the sidewalks above the main entrance. Adjacent to this appears to be a bar and lounge that is almost ready to be publicly revealed. The property will also feature a second-floor terrace and a ground-floor rear garden. All of these spaces will sit behind the red brick fenestration and a series of four tall open-air arched voids that line the southern elevation of the podium.

The bricks add a strong contrast in texture, material, and color to the main tower, which is enclosed in floor-to-ceiling glass and opaque gray panels. At the very top is a secondary bar and lounge on the 27th floor. This is where we see the rectangular cantilever running the whole width across the top of the southern profile. From here, visitors and patrons will have panoramic views of the Hudson River and Hell’s Kitchen all the way down to Hudson Yards.

An opening date for the hotel had not been announced, though it looks like the establishment will more than likely open within the coming months.

    Actually not a bad design.
I am shocked this hotel doesn’t have the usual wretched setback from the street wall. I wonder what the difference is here.

Just loved its structure and last photo stayed over me, to show prominent built. It was not a first time for both of us, to see construction reached up to beautiful: Thanks to Michael Young.

  3. The opportunity at the top to make something architectural is completely lost. It is a bad design, in fact, it’s not really design. The best part is the base which looks like Kaufman never touched an existing building

  4. This one has been sort of a better hit on Kaufman’s part. The base is very nice for a building of his. The actual tower is somewhat okay too. But still, it’s not great.

    • It is or it is not? What’s “ok” about it? Fine detailing of the tower? Unadorned cantilever at the top? He got lucky with the based and you are seduced

    • Kaufman didn’t design the base. Come on, it’s actually miserable. Kaufman is incompetent.

  5. And the veteran Cop said to his rookie partner, ” This place is worse than Hell, it’s Hell’s Kitchen.”

  6. It’s still a soulless piece of Kaufman trash. I knew this was his “design” before I even read the article. It’s not even decent filler.

  7. Glad to see it actually looks better than that terrible rendering. Not bad!

  8. Kaufman should sue his architecture school for malpractice. He has an excellent case.

  9. Can’t anyone stop this?
