Construction is continuing to rise on Disney’s 1.2 million-square-foot headquarters at 137 Varick Street in Hudson Square. Alternately addressed as Four Hudson Square, the 22-story, 338-foot-tall steel-framed structure is designed by Skidmore, Owings & Merrill and is being developed by Silverstein Properties. The media giant purchased the full-block parcel from Trinity Church Real Estate for a total of $650 million and Skanska demolished four old structures that occupied the site last summerLendlease is constructing the new headquarters, which is bound by Varick Street to the east, Spring Street to the south, Hudson Street to the west, and Vandam Street to the north.

Construction is now several floors above street level and it looks like the steel superstructure and metal decking are evenly distributed across the entire property. Photographs from our last update showed the western half of the property further ahead. Multiple cranes rise around the footprint of 137 Varick Street, carefully lifting steel and materials to the newly assembled floors. With the quick pace of progress, workers should easily reach the first major setback on the tenth floor in the next couple of months. From that point, the two towers will rise up to their pinnacles.

The exterior renderings below depict a symmetrical pair of 338-foot-tall towers sitting atop a large podium. There are a series of setbacks that will provide landscaped outdoor terraces for occupants. The envelope looks to be composed of pale green terracotta panels, bronze finishes, and square floor-to-ceiling glass arranged in a consistent grid across all four sides of the edifice.

Inside, Disney’s new property will feature multiple film and production studios, office space, and ground-floor retail. Floor plates are expected to span up to 85,000 square feet with the largest on the lower half of the building.

Square floor-to-ceiling glass arranged in a consistent grid, across all four sides of the edifice. And pale green terracotta panels, bronze finishes: Thanks to Michael Young.

  2. Nice Disney is moving its world headquarters to New York.

  3. Take note the grid lock Holland tunnel traffic blocking easy access to the building. Was location ever a consideration !

  4. thanks Disney for destroying four beautiful century old masonary buildings and putting up a glass cube instead of building on top of them or incorporating them into the new structure.
What a waste of nyc history destroyed for no reason.
Thanks to these conglomerates for destroying NYC history once again.
Can’t these architects help save these old buildings?

  5. Would have been better in midtown or Hudson Yards area.

  6. Disney is NOT. I repeat NOT moving their corporate HQ out of Burbank California. This is their New York City HQ for some of their brands.
