Construction is complete on The Civilian, a 27-story hotel at 305 West 48th Street in Hell’s Kitchen, and the property is preparing to open to the public later this week. Designed by Gene Kaufman Architects and developed by Bright Management with Rockwell Group as the interior designer, the 303-foot-tall tower spans 73,000 square feet, with 203 guest rooms spread across 59,000 square feet. Joy Construction served as the general contractor for The Civilian, which is located at the corner of West 48th Street and Eighth Avenue, a short walk from Times Square and the Theater District.

The main entrance along West 48th Street was still being worked on during YIMBY’s last update in the late summer months. Now we can see the finished black canopy protruding over the sidewalks and bearing the name of the hotel. Vertical signage is also attached and illuminated at the eastern corner of the red-colored brick façade. There are several tall open-air arches with steel elements below each, and planters that sit at the bottom next to an outdoor terrace furnished with dining tables and round lighting fixtures. Above, the main tower is now fully clad in a mixture of floor-to-ceiling glass and dark gray paneling covering up the blank concrete walls.

The Civilian will feature a rooftop bar, a private library, a garden, lounge, and a bistro. SIXTY Collective hotelier Jason Pomeranc is aiming to bring an inspiring and immersive theatrical experience to the hotel that celebrates the past and present industry through the use of numerous displayed pieces of Broadway art, drawings, model sets, costumes, photographs, and relics from past performances.

The Civilian is set to open on Wednesday, November 24.

  1. ‘The Civilian’..great name.

  2. Everything on the signing and the website indicates the name of the hotel is CIVILIAN, not The Civilian. Kind of like the name of the band is Eagles, not The Eagles. Just saying…

Lame name but cool concept. Looking forward to staying there and checking out the theatre memorabilia.

  4. As this project was presented months ago, the base was too good to be true coming from GK’s office – the tower banal and a detriment to the neighborhood….hopefully, a sexy, thoughtful and well crafted tower on the 8th Avenue lot will put this building in it’s shadow.

  5. a great entrance but another disastrous out of context glass box by the worst architect the world has known Gene Kaufman

  6. This is actually one of Kaufman’s better projects. The tower is a bit bland, but at least it’s not like a prison. However, where this building really shines is the base. I adore the brick and the arches. It looks last century.

  7. Gene Kaufman was in vacation when they start design building, but quickly returns after see it for lower floors, so half of GK for tower floors…
