At number 26 on our December countdown is 555 West 38th Street, a 570-foot-tall residential skyscraper in Midtown, Manhattan’s Hudson Yards district. Designed by Pelli Clarke Pelli Architects with SLCE Architects as the architect of record and developed by Rockrose, the 52-story tower will yield 598 rental units. Site C GC LLC is the general contractor for the project, which is located along Eleventh Avenue between West 38th Street and West 39th Street, directly across from the Jacob K. Javits Center.

The main western elevation facing Eleventh Avenue and the Jakob J. Javits Center can be seen below with the afternoon sunlight and shadow highlighting the grid of dark blue metal strips dividing the uniform floor-to-ceiling glass panels. Gray-colored ventilation grilles cover the midway section on the slim southern profile, while more of the same elements wrap around the entire top mechanical section below the flat roof parapet.

We should expect the construction elevator to be removed sometime early next year, followed by the wrap-around sidewalk scaffolding that’s covering the progress made with the ground-floor façade.

Golden hour is a great time to see the sleek finish of the envelope, as well as the other glass towers in the vicinity. For now, 555 West 38th Street occupies a fairly isolated position among some of the last empty plots in Midtown.

Updates about the interior finishes and potential amenities have yet to be disclosed, though it’s without a doubt that occupants will have 360-degree views looking over the Jacob K. Javits Center, the Hudson River, sunsets over Jersey City, Hoboken, and Weehawken, New Jersey to the west, the vertically growing skyline of Hudson Yards to the south, and the rest of Midtown to the east and north.

The nearest subway station from the property is 34th Street–Hudson Yards, servicing the 7 train, located to the south by Bella Abzug Park. The 1, 2, 3, A, C, and E trains, and NJ Transit and Amtrak are found to the east by Pennsylvania Station.

555 West 38th Street is slated for completion in the fall of 2022.

Pay close attention, you’ll see slanting and unequal angles. Different from the cutting line, on One World Trade Center: Thanks to Michael Young.

  2. Number 27 was 587′ tall…?

  3. The building next to it has no windows on an entire side.
