A new synagogue and community center for the Bais Shmuel Chabad has broken ground in Crown Heights, Brooklyn. Located at the corner of Union Street and Albany Avenue, the new building will contain religious worship and ceremonial spaces, a social hall for events, and a small community housing component.
Designed by S. Wieder Architect, the building will top out at four stories. The structure will feature a sleek facade with sandy-hued panels, slim glass windows with bronzed metal framing, and a multistory window opening at the center of the building. A series of planters installed along Albany Avenue and Union Street will match the bronzed window framing.
While there are no renderings available of building interiors, the one illustration appears to reveal a partial penthouse and an open-air roof deck.
The Bais Shmuel Chabad center will improve a 5,779-square-foot lot that was previously undeveloped. It is unclear when the new building is expected to debut.

Yes it does. The “Chin” on top and the front elevation resemble the Ark of the Covenant where a Torah is kept. It’s the same idea as the front elevation of the main branch of the Brooklyn Public Library at Grand Army Plaza; the building was completed in 1940, with the front elevation symbolizing an open book.
