Façade installation has begun on Fashion Institute of Technology‘s New Academic Building, a ten-story structure at 220 West 28th Street in Chelsea, Manhattan. Designed by SHoP Architects, the 110,000-square-foot facility is planned to achieve LEED Gold certification and will feature new classrooms, administrative offices, review and exhibition spaces, and a student quad illuminated by skylights. EE Cruz & Company did the foundations and Forte Construction Corp. is serving as the general contractor for the property, which is located between Seventh and Eighth Avenues.

At the time of our last update in August, the steel superstructure had recently topped out and workers were in the process of pouring the concrete floor plates on the lower levels. Since then, the remaining floors have been formed, most of the steelwork has been sprayed with fireproofing, and the construction elevator has finished erection on the eastern end of the property. Now, crews have begun to install the first of the bronze-finned glass curtain wall panels.

The New Academic Building is situated within close proximity of Penn StationMadison Square Garden, and Moynihan Train Hall. The local 1 train is located half a block to the east at the 28th Street station on Seventh Avenue.

Below are additional exterior and interior renderings for the project. The center of the building will feature a more transparent strip of glass enclosing the student lounge level.

Glass curtain wall begins to installed just now, and the remaining not yet work on floors above. But I can be viewed center of the building was designed in a rendering, principles progress that I thought that it’s beautiful with its transparency: Thanks to Michael Young.

  2. Looks cool, as it should, given the stylish creations of those who attend 🙂
