The Brooklyn Tower’s Podium Continues to Take Shape in Downtown Brooklyn

Work is continuing on the multi-story podium of The Brooklyn Tower, a 1,066-foot residential supertall at 9 DeKalb Avenue in Downtown Brooklyn. Designed by SHoP Architects and developed and built by JDS Development, the 93-story skyscraper stands as the tallest structure in the outer boroughs that will yield 550 units composed of 150 condominiums, 120 affordable rentals, and 280 market-rate rentals, as well as a 100,000-square-foot retail podium incorporated into the landmarked Dime Savings Bank of Brooklyn. Douglas Elliman Development Marketing Group is the marketing, sales, and leasing agent for the residential component, Gachot Studios is the interior designer, Krista Ninivaggi of Woods Bagot is the amenity designer, and HMWhite is the landscape designer for the property, which is bound by Flatbush Avenue Extension to the northeast, Fleet Street to the northwest, DeKalb Avenue to the south, and the adjoining Dime Savings Bank to the west.

The tower is fully enclosed in its envelope of dark glass and metal paneling with the exception of the strip on the northwestern elevation where the construction elevator remains attached. Since our last update in December, installation of the signature “convexcave” columns has begun on the eastern side of the podium.

The following photos show the details in SHoP’s marble “convexcave” columns, which transition from a typical convex geometry at street level to an inverse concave shape at the top of the podium. Thin gold-hued metal lines the edges of the columns, adding to their visual impact.

The Brooklyn Tower will feature 120,000 square feet of indoor-outdoor amenities including a 24-hour attended lobby, a package valet, an in-house coffee stand, and a ride share lounge. The Dime Savings Bank’s roof deck will feature a 75-foot-long lap pool, a kids pool, a whirlpool, sundecks, a hammock lounge, and outdoor dining areas with barbecue grills and a fire pit. The pools will surround the Guastavino dome, accompanied by an adjacent double-height poolside lounge with shuffleboard and a cocktail bar, a chef’s kitchen with a private dining room, and a living room lounge with group and private seating areas.

Entertainment and recreational amenities include a children’s playroom with a pantry, a screening room with a wet bar, a billiards room with a bar, and a library lounge with coworking spaces, conference rooms, and a private meeting room. The Sky Park on the 66th floor will feature an open-air loggia with a basketball court, while the 85th floor will house a Sky Lounge with multiple lounges, bars, and an outdoor fireplace with panoramic views of New York City.

Life Time Athletic Club is expected to open a space in the podium with barre, cycle, pilates, and yoga studios. The club will also offer group fitness and private training, a recovery space with chiropractic services, and a LifeCafe restaurant.

The Brooklyn Tower is anticipated to finish construction later this year.

I saw what I wanted to see on the podium is very beautiful from its rendering, and the higher structure invites you to look directly upward. It’s not difficult to see on attract and predominance of dark paneling, thin gold-hued metal lines the edges designed very well in position: Thanks to Michael Young.

An instant landmark. The very best in Brooklyn.

  5. How does a “95” story tower that claims to have 550 units, when there are…
    150 condos
    120 affordable units= 270?!

Where are the other “missing” 280?!

Inquiring minds want to know? 🤔

  6. The absolute most beautiful skyscraper of the century.

  7. Looks like tower of evil.

  8. The tower is very sleek and I like that they preserved the bank structure and have incorporated the marble element into the design of the podium.

  9. Can’t wait for the inevitable tower on the Juniors site which will block at least half the southern view.

When that happens I hope Juniors will reopen in all its nostalgic glory a 2 level location in the base.

If NYC had an official style, it would likely be Art Deco, and it is nice to see its influence here. I hope the bank area remains open to gawkers—many of us love McKim, Meade, and White buildings. I wonder how the building will be heated with the future bans on gas and oil. They better plan on an induction fire pit.

  12. It’s a coal fired building. Seven coal furnace’s in the basement!

  13. Gorgeous! Wish I could live there.

  14. Batman’s new headquarters. So very dark… i wish they would do something with the top, looks unfinished.
