Work Resumes on Sir David Adjaye’s Studio Museum of Harlem at 144 West 125th Street in Harlem, Manhattan

Construction is progressing on The Studio Museum of Harlem, a new six-story home for the cultural institution at 144 West 125th Street in Harlem, Manhattan. Designed by Sir David Adjaye of Adjaye Associates with Cooper Robertson & Partners as the architect of record, the 82,000-square-foot structure will feature expanded gallery and exhibition space for more than 2,000 objects, multiple lecture halls, a roof deck, a café, and retail space. Sciame Construction LLC and McKissack & McKissack are the construction managers for the property, which is situated on an interior lot between Malcolm X Boulevard to the east and Adam Clayton Powell Jr. Boulevard to the west.

Permits Filed for Expansion of Studio Museum in Harlem, 144 West 125th Street

Permits have been filed for a six-story building at 144 West 125th Street, in Harlem, Manhattan. The new structure will add to the Studio Museum in Harlem, an international center for contemporary artists of African descent. In September the institution announced a $175 million capital campaign to help fund construction, and the development will be a private-public initiative in partnership with the City of New York.

Studio Museum In Harlem Building New 70,000 Square-Foot Building At 144 West 125th Street

The Studio Museum at 144 West 125th Street in Harlem is planning to build a new 70,000 square-foot museum, including 10,000 square feet for galleries. According to The New York Times, the existing five-story, 60,000 square-foot structure would be demolished for a ground-up building designed by the UK-based David Adjaye; Cooper, Robertson & Partners is the executive architect. Plans will be submitted this Summer, and construction is expected to start in 2017 for a 2019 completion.
