It was back in 2014 that Manhattan Community Board 7 started considering a plan to convert a landmark former Upper West Side church into condos. Now, it is February of 2016 and there is still no word on whether that conversion will go forward, its fate held in the hands of the Board of Standards and Appeals.

Will the former First Church of Christ, Scientist in New York City at 361 Central Park West become condominiums? We still don’t know. But we do know many in the community don’t want the conversion and at least one pastor wants to preach there.
It was all the way back on March 11th that the Landmarks Preservation Commission approved controversial plans to convert the former First Church of Christ, Scientist in New York City, located at 361 Central Park West and West 96th Street, into 39 condominiums. But that wasn’t the last word. The battle went on in the community board, and it continued this week at the Board of Standards and Appeals (BSA), and will continue into 2016.

The plan to convert a landmark former Upper West Side church into condominiums is still a no-go at the Landmarks Preservation Commission, though there is now really only one sticking point – the proposed windows on the east side of the building. The building in question is the former First Church of Christ, Scientist of New York City at 361 Central Park West (a.k.a. 1 West 96th Street). The original structure was completed by Carrére & Hastings in 1903.
