Construction Tops Out on 70-74 Gansevoort Street in Meatpacking District

Construction has topped out on a six-story, 112-foot-tall building at 70-74 Gansevoort Street. The Meatpacking District property is part of a block-long redevelopment and revitalization of Gansevoort Street between Washington Street and Greenwich Street. BKSK Architects is the designer and Aurora Capital and William Gottlieb Real Estate are developing the mixed-use office project, which sits adjacent to 60-68 Gansevoort Street, a five-story project also part of the neighborhood renewal plan. Both structures are enclosed in scaffolding and thick black netting, while the eastern end can be seen from the High Line with their exteriors preserved.

Recent photos of 70-74 Gansevoort Street show the commercial development beginning its vertical ascent over the Meatpacking District. Located along Gansevoort Street, this is one of several buildings among the Gansevoort Street redevelopment project that spans the length between Washington Street and Greenwich Street. Set to stand roughly 112 feet tall, it is being designed by BKSK Architects and developed by Aurora Capital and William Gottlieb Real Estate.

Landmarks Commissioners Make Feelings Known As Gansevoort Market Presentation Continues Without Approval

William Gottlieb Real Estate and Aurora Capital’s Meatpacking District proposal is not yet a go. On Tuesday, the Landmarks Preservation Commission took no action on the BKSK Architects-designed project on the block from 46-74 Gansevoort Street, between Greenwich Street and Washington Street, in the Gansevoort Market Historic District. The commissioners didn’t seem like they’d require the current low-scale structures to remain as is, but certainly had issues with just how big they’d get and just how it would look.

Architects Tout Gansevoort Market Plan As Return to History

In November, a plan for a commercial revitalization of the south side of a block of Gansevoort Street, in the Meatpacking District, went before the Landmarks Preservation Commission. In a rare, but hardly unheard of occurrence, the hearing was paused before the commissioners could discuss the proposal. With the continuation of that session likely to come soon, YIMBY sat down with the architects behind it to talk about its place in the history of the area.
