This year marked the 50th anniversary of the New York City landmarks law, which empowered the Landmarks Preservation Commission to designate landmarks and historic districts in the five boroughs. With 2015 coming to an end, we thought it would be a good time to review what the commission has protected this year. Six individual landmarks and four historic districts were designated, adding up to protection for over 2,000 more structures.
Herman Weiser, doing business as a Brooklyn-based LLC, has filed applications for a four-story, five-unit mixed-use building at 687 Myrtle Avenue, in northwestern Bedford-Stuyvesant. Located four blocks north of the G train’s stop at Bedford-Nostrand Avs., the 6,036 square-foot project will include 1,681 square feet of ground-floor retail space. Residential units begin on the second floor and will average 871 square feet apiece. One of units on the fourth floor will also feature a fifth-floor penthouse, and Greenwich Village-based De-Jan Lu Architect is the applicant of record. An existing two-story townhouse must first be demolished.
Property owner David Rubin, doing business as an anonymous LLC, has filed applications for a four-story, five-unit residential building at 149 Skillman Street, in northwestern Bedford-Stuyvesant, three blocks north of the Bedford-Nostrand Avs. stop on the G train. The 10,000 square-foot structure would rise on a 50-foot-wide vacant lot and boast family-sized units averaging 2,000 square feet apiece. The project will likely cater to the Hasidic population, who notably populate this part of Bed-Stuy and, to the north, South Williamsburg. Greenwich Village-based De-Jan Lu Architect is the architect of record.
Deep in the heart of Bed-Stuy, a supportive housing developer hopes to build a five-story residential building. The has filed plans for a development at 500 Gates Avenue, between Tompkins and Marcy Avenues.
