9 DeKalb Avenue Approaches Supertall Status in Downtown Brooklyn

Construction is continuing to rise on 9 DeKalb Avenue, a 93-story residential skyscraper in Downtown Brooklyn, as the structure nears the 984-foot-tall threshold that will make it the first supertall in the outer boroughs. Designed by SHoP Architects and developed by JDS, the 1,066-foot-tall project will yield 400 rental apartments, 30 percent of which are marketed at affordable housing rates, and 150 condominiums above a retail podium bound by Flatbush Avenue Extension to the northeast, Fleet Street to the northwest, the landmark Dime Savings Bank of Brooklyn to the southwest, and DeKalb Avenue to the south.

The finishing exterior touches are underway on 111 West 57th Street, a 1,428-foot supertall residential skyscraper in Midtown and the world’s most slender building with a height-to-width ratio of 24:1. Designed by SHoP Architects and developed by JDS Development, Property Markets Group, and Spruce Capital Partners, 111 West 57th Street will yield 60 units designed by Studio Sofield and marketed by Douglas Elliman Development Marketing. The project is located on Billionaires’ Row between Sixth and Seventh Avenues, and is almost perfectly aligned with the center line of Central Park.

9 DeKalb Avenue Becomes Tallest Structure in Brooklyn

9 DeKalb Avenue has passed a milestone in its way to becoming the first supertall skyscraper in the outer boroughs. The 93-story residential tower recently surpassed the 720-foot roof height of Brooklyn Point, giving it the title of the tallest structure in Brooklyn. Designed by SHoP Architects and developed by JDS, 9 DeKalb Avenue will stand 1,066 feet tall and yield 450 rental apartments and 150 condominiums. The site is bound by Flatbush Avenue Extension to the northeast, Fleet Street to the northwest, the landmark Dime Savings Bank of Brooklyn to the southwest, and DeKalb Avenue to the south.

111 West 57th Street’s Crane Finally Coming Down in Midtown, Manhattan

Our last update on 111 West 57th Street covered the removal of the exterior hoist on the northern elevation of the 1,428-foot Midtown supertall. Now, the construction crane is rapidly being disassembled from the southern face of the world’s most slender structure. Designed by SHoP Architects and developed by JDS Development, Property Markets Group, and Spruce Capital Partners, 111 West 57th Street features a height-to-width ratio of 24:1 and will yield 60 units designed by Studio Sofield and marketed by Douglas Elliman Development Marketing. Construction has passed the halfway mark on 9 DeKalb Avenue, a 73-story residential skyscraper in Downtown Brooklyn and the Outer Boroughs’ first supertall at 1,066 feet tall. Designed by SHoP Architects and developed by JDS, the tower will soon eclipse the 720-foot-tall architectural height of Kohn Pedersen Fox’s Brooklyn Point to secure the title of the tallest building in Brooklyn. 9 DeKalb Avenue will yield a total of 425 rental apartments and 150 condominiums.

NIMBY Lawsuits Fail Against Two Bridges Supertalls, On Manhattan’s Lower East Side

This week the New York State Court of Appeals shut down a lawsuit opposing the development of four new skyscrapers in Lower Manhattan’s Two Bridges neighborhood, as reported in The Broadsheet. This legal move upheld the August ruling by Appellate Division of the New York State Supreme Court in favor of a group of developers, including JDS Development Group, CIM Group, L+M Development Partners, and Starrett Corporation, to build four more towers along the Two Bridges waterfront on the Lower East Side. The site is bound by Cherry Street to the north, South Street to the south, mid-block between Pike Slip and Rutgers Street to the west, and mid-block between Clinton and Montgomery Streets to the east.

The reinforced concrete superstructure currently stands around 28 stories tall, more than one-third of its 73-story total.
