Modernization work is shaping up on PENN 2, a 31-story commercial building at Two Penn Plaza in Midtown, Manhattan. Designed by MdeAS Architects and developed by Vornado Realty Trust, the project involves the replacement of the 412-foot-tall tower’s aging midcentury façade with a lighter glass curtain wall and the full gut renovation of its 1.61 million square feet of office space, as well as the construction of new pocketed corner terraces and a multistory cantilevering volume along Seventh Avenue. GMSLLP is the façade consultant and Turner Construction Company and Skanska are the contractors for the property, which is located between West 31st and West 33rd Streets within the Penn District revitalization master plan.

Designed by MdeAS Architects and developed by Vornado Realty Trust, the project involves a full-scale overhaul of the 412-foot-tall structure’s 1.61 million square feet of office space, replacement of its façade with a modern glass curtain wall, and the construction of a multi-story cantilevering volume along Seventh Avenue. GMSLLP is the façade consultant and Turner Construction Company and Skanska are the contractors for the property, which is located between West 31st and West 33rd Streets and a central part of the Penn District revitalization that will transform the area surrounding Penn Station and Madison Square Garden.

Designed by MdeAS Architects and developed by Vornado Realty Trust, the project involves the replacement of the 53-year-old structure’s façade with a modern glass curtain wall. The 412-foot-tall, 1.61 million-square-foot tower was originally designed by Charles Luckman Associates and stands along Seventh Avenue between West 31st and 33rd Streets. PENN 2 is immediately to the east of Madison Square Garden and is one component within the Penn District revitalization scheme that calls for the construction and redevelopment of several buildings surrounding Penn Station in the coming years. Turner Construction Company is the general contractor for the project.

The 412-foot-tall, 1.61-million-square-foot tower was originally designed by Charles Luckman Associates and stands along Seventh Avenue between West 31st and 33rd Streets, immediately to the east of Madison Square Garden. A new set of renderings has been released for Vornado Realty Trust‘s 7.4-million-square-foot Penn District redevelopment in Midtown. Created by DBOX, the images highlight Penn 15, a 1,270-foot supertall designed by Foster + Partners at 15 Penn Plaza. The overall plan aims to transform and revitalize the cityscape between Sixth and Seventh Avenues and West 32nd and West 34th Streets with a total of eight new skyscrapers surrounding the 109-year-old James A. Farley Building and Skidmore Owings & Merrill‘s newly opened Moynihan Train Hall, as well as One and Two Penn Plaza and Madison Square Garden.

More renderings have been revealed for PENN 2, Vornado Realty Trust‘s recently commenced renovation of Two Penn Plaza, a 412-foot-tall commercial office building in Midtown. Originally designed by Charles Luckman Associates, the 31-story structure currently yields 1.61 million square feet and stands immediately to the east of Madison Square Garden along Seventh Avenue between West 31st and 33rd Streets. The project, designed by MdeAS Architects, will fully revamp the 53-year-old building’s interiors and replace its dark mid-century modern façade with a lighter, more transparent glass envelope designed by MdeAS Architects. The endeavor is among a flurry of efforts to modernize the area surrounding Penn Station, which include the proposed construction of a nearly 1,200-foot-tall, 2.7-million-square-foot office supertall designed by Foster + Partners that would rise directly across the street on the site of the Hotel Pennsylvania.

Updated renderings created by DBOX for Vornado Realty Trust showcase The Penn District, a 7.4-million-square-foot development in Midtown, Manhattan. Located within the same boundaries as the new Madison Square Garden complex from Vishaan Chakrabarti’s Practice for Architecture and Urbanism that YIMBY recently revealed, the renderings offer a more finalized version of five skyscrapers with the tallest, referred to as Penn 15, anticipated to rise nearly 1,200 feet high. Foster + Partners is designing the structures, which would stand close to the 109-year-old James A. Farley Building and Skidmore Owings & Merrill‘s newly opened Moynihan Train Hall, as well as One and Two Penn Plaza and Madison Square Garden. The redesign also appears to be a tweaked iteration of 15 Penn Plaza from a previous depiction that YIMBY showed back in May 2020.

Twin Supertalls Revealed as Part of Garden City, Possible Relocation of Madison Square Garden, in Midtown Manhattan

Community Board Five’s Land Use, Housing & Zoning Committee voted in a meeting on Wednesday to advance plans for a massive undertaking in Midtown involving the conversion of Madison Square Garden into a new concourse for Penn Station, and the creation of a new home for the sports facility between two supertall skyscrapers near Herald Square. Initially proposed in 2016 by Vishaan Chakrabarti, founder of Practice for Architecture and Urbanism (PAU), new renderings give visual context to the plan, to which the city council agreed with the consideration of The Madison Square Garden Company’s acquisition of a shorter extension of its current lease.

Request For Proposals Issued For Penn Station Expansion & Renovation

Earlier this month, news broke that Gov. Andrew Cuomo was moving forward with plans to upgrade Pennsylvania Station, between West 31st and 33rd streets on Eighth Avenue in Midtown, and now the state has issued a Request For Proposals (RFR) for the project, dubbed the Empire Station Complex. According to Curbed NY, the document highlights plans to build a main entrance on Eight Avenue, which would entail demolishing the Theater at MSG. In addition, it would connect the station to the proposed new tracks of the Gateway Project, which includes new tunnels under the Hudson River and Amtrak’s expansion into Moynihan Train Hall (the Farley Post Office) and the connecting concourse, along with other upgrades. The renderings were created by Skidmore, Owings & Merrill, although the selected team could go ahead with a different firm. Proposals are due by April 22.

State Moves Forward With Penn Station Renovations & Moynihan Station Plans

Gov. Andrew Cuomo is preparing to issue a request-for-proposals later this week to renovate and upgrade Pennsylvania Station, located under Madison Square Garden on Eighth Avenue between West 31st and 33rd Streets. According to the Observer, the project is part of the $26 billion investment in the Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA), with the state contributing $8.3 billion. Multiple plans for a new entrance have already been put forth, one of which involves the demolition of the MSG Paramount Theater in replace of a glass enclosure, seen in these latest renderings.
