Longtime collaborators McSam Hotel Group and Gene Kaufman Architects have once again paired up on a new hotel development in Midtown, Manhattan. Located at 223 West 46th Street, the project replaces a former parking lot. According to the architect, the building will rise at least 26 stories, although the rendering depicts a tower with 34 floors.
Excavation work has commenced for 29th & 5th, Bjarke Ingels Group‘s proposed skyscraper at 3 West 29th Street in NoMad. Excavators, piling machines, and other construction equipment are in use at the site, which is located just five blocks south of the Empire State Building. Developed by HFZ Capital Group, the future 34-story, 551-foot-tall office tower will yield 300,000 square feet and incorporate shear glass walls and staggered outdoor terraces along the eastern elevation.
The demolition of 270 Park Avenue is progressing in Midtown East, as new scaffolding and netting have been installed on the exterior of the Modernist-style skyscraper. These join the construction elevator and sidewalk scaffolding that were assembled several months ago on the 1.5-million-square-foot, 52-story tower. JPMorgan Chase is the developer and Foster + Partners Architects is the design firm for the upcoming 57-story supertall that will rise in its place. Adamson Associates is listed as the architect of record.
Work on Virgin Hotel‘s reflective glass curtain wall is making quick progress at 1225 Broadway in NoMad. Designed by Stantec, the 476-foot-tall superstructure topped out in February, and over the past months the envelope has climbed closer to the building’s pinnacle. The tower will feature 300,000 square feet of newly built space, of which most will be occupied by its 460 hotel rooms. The lower podium floors will contain 90,000 square feet of retail. Lam Group is the developer of the property, and Sir Richard Branson of Virgin Group will be in charge of managing the hotel.
