First Rendering Revealed Of Renovations On New York Public Library’s Mid-Manhattan Branch, Midtown

The first rendering has been revealed of the renovation project planned for the New York Public Library‘s Main Branch, located between West 40th and 42nd streets on Fifth Avenue. Netherlands-based firm Mecanoo and local architecture firm Beyer Blinder Belle are designing the renovations, which will increase the amount of public space in the 646,680-square-foot structure by 35 percent. Specifically, back offices, the lower level, and the roof will be converted into public space. There will also be designated sections for specific age groups and professional interests. The library will close by the end of 2017 and reopen in 2020, Curbed NY reported.

Foundation work is underway on the 24-story, 62-unit mixed-use building under development at 1050 Sixth Avenue, located between West 39th and 40th streets in Midtown near Bryant Park. The progress can be seen thanks to a photo posted to the YIMBY Forums. The latest building permits indicate the project will measure 62,886 square feet and stand 299 feet to the top of its bulkhead.


701 Seventh Avenue

42-Story, 452-Key EDITION Hotel Ascends at 701 Seventh Avenue, Times Square

Vertical construction is moving full steam ahead on the 42-story, 452-key EDITION hotel (by Marriott) under development at 701 Seventh Avenue. That’s on the corner of West 47th Street in the heart of Times Square. The progress can be seen thanks to a photo posted to the YIMBY Forums. The tower, dubbed 20 Times Square, will rise 517 feet above street level and will contain 269,769 square feet of commercial space, according to the latest building permits. Retail space will be located on two cellar levels and the ground through fourth floors. Actual hotel rooms will be located on the 14th through 40th floors.

Last week, YIMBY brought you news that the Landmarks Preservation Commission voted to calendar sections of the interior of the 44-story, 1,413-key Waldorf Astoria New York hotel at 301 Park Avenue, located on an entire Midtown block. Now, as part of a planned mixed-use conversion, property owner Anbang Insurance Group has filed applications to convert large swaths of the tower into residential units.
