42nd Street Theaters, Osborne Interior, More Round Out First Manhattan Landmarks Backlog Hearing

Last Thursday, the Landmarks Preservation Commission held another public hearing in the process of dealing with its 95-item backlog. It was the first to deal with properties in Manhattan. In addition to hearing testimony about the IRT Powerhouse, Bergdorf Goodman’s headquarters, Union Square Park, and others, the commissioners heard about seven theaters on 42nd Street, a five-story building, a former hotel, and an apartment building lobby.

Preservationists Battle Bergdorf Goodman Over Future Of Midtown Headquarters

The future of the Bergdorf Goodman department store was one of the subjects of a contentious public hearing at the Landmarks Preservation Commission on Thursday. The commission is in the process of dealing with its 95-item backlog and began held the first day of public hearings for properties in Manhattan (the second and final hearing is November 12). Not surprisingly, the battle pitted preservationists against the building’s owner.

Construction Update: 3 Manhattan West Rising Quickly, Gets Cladding

While it’s taken over a decade for the first few projects to get moving along the Far West Side, both Hudson Yards and Manhattan West are now well underway, with the concrete for 10 Hudson Yards having topped-out just last week. Now, we have an update from Tectonic with photos of 3 Manhattan West. Completion is slightly further out at the future residential tower, but the building is rapidly rising into the Midtown skyline, and cladding installation now underway.

Excavation Wraps Up At 701 Seventh Avenue, Site Of 39-Story, 452-Key Marriott Edition Hotel

Back in October of 2012, YIMBY broke news of plans for a significant hotel and retail tower at 701 Seventh Avenue, in Times Square, and now that excavation is nearly complete, foundation work is imminent on the 39-story, 452-key Marriott Edition, according to the New York Post. Dubbed 20 Times Square, the building will measure just under 270,000 square feet and will include 76,000 square feet of retail space. The retail base will also feature an 18,000 square-foot LED sign. Steven Witkoff, Ian Schrager, Winthrop Realty Trust, and Maefield Development are the developers, while PBDW Architects is designing. Completion is expected in 2017.
