Foundation Work Progresses for 740 Eighth Avenue in Midtown, Manhattan

At number two on our year-end countdown of the tallest buildings under construction in New York is 740 Eighth Avenue, a 1,067-foot mixed-use supertall skyscraper in Midtown, Manhattan. Designed by ODA with SLCE Architects as the architect of record and developed by Extell, the 52-story structure will span 776,000 square feet with an 825-room hotel on the lower half and a public observatory with a drop ride attraction above. The property will also feature lower-level retail space, a restaurant on two of the upper floors, and a pool deck for hotel guests. Lendlease is the general contractor, WSP is the structural engineer, and Ancora Engineering is handling excavation and foundations for the project, which is located along Eighth Avenue between West 45th and 46th Streets on the border of Times Square and Hell’s Kitchen.

520 Fifth Avenue’s Curtain Wall Takes Shape in Midtown, Manhattan

At number three on our year-end countdown of the tallest buildings under construction in New York is 520 Fifth Avenue, a 1,000-foot residential supertall skyscraper in Midtown, Manhattan. Designed by Kohn Pedersen Fox and developed by Rabina, which took over from Ceruzzi Properties and SMI USA in 2019, the 76-story structure will span 415,000 square feet and yield 98 condominium units with interior design by Charles & Co., as well as commercial space on the ground floor and four cellar levels. WSP is the structural engineer, DeSimone Consulting Engineers is the façade consultant, and Suffolk Construction is the general contractor for the property, which is located at the northwest corner of Fifth Avenue and West 43rd Street, one block north of Bryant Park.

Permits Filed for 172 Powers Street in Williamsburg, Brooklyn

Permits have been filed to expand a three-story structure into a four-story mixed-use building at 172 Powers Street in Williamsburg, Brooklyn. Located near Graham Avenue and Powers Street, the lot is near the Grand Street subway station, serviced by the L train. Mendel Fleischman of Thegardenbond is listed as the owner behind the applications.

The seventh-tallest building on our year-end construction countdown is 50 West 66th Street, a 775-foot-tall residential skyscraper on Manhattan’s Upper West Side. Designed by Snøhetta with SLCE Architects as the executive architect and developed by Extell and Tennor Holding, the 69-story structure will yield 127 condominium units and claim the title as the tallest building in the neighborhood. Lendlease is the general contractor for the project, which is located on an interior lot between Columbus Avenue and Central Park West with frontage on both West 65th and West 66th Streets.

1118 Fulton Street’s Brick Façade Takes Shape in Clinton Hill, Brooklyn

Exterior work is progressing on 1118 Fulton Street, a six-story mixed-use building in Clinton Hill, Brooklyn. Designed by JFA and developed by Threefold Developers under the 1118 Fulton St LLC, the 80-foot-tall structure will span 11,718 square feet and yield 11 units with an average scope of 837 square feet, as well as ground-floor and cellar-level commercial space, bicycle parking, amenities, and mezzanines on the fifth and sixth stories. HP Building Management INC is the general contractor for the property, which is located on an interior lot between Casson and Franklin Avenues.

Located between 89th and 90th Avenues, the lot is near the Parsons Boulevard subway station, serviced by the F train and the Jamaica Center-Parsons/Archer, serviced by E, J, and Z trains. Song Dong of FR Development LLC is listed as the owner behind the applications.

43-30 24th Street Continues its Ascent Over Long Island City, Queens

At number eight on our year-end countdown of the tallest buildings under construction in New York is 43-30 24th Street, a 731-foot-tall residential skyscraper in Long Island City, Queens. Designed by Hill West Architects and developed by Carmel Partners, the 66-story structure will yield 921 units with an average scope of 910 square feet, as well as 17,400 square feet of ground-retail space. Carmel Construction East is the general contractor for project, which is bound by 43rd Avenue to the north, 44th Road to the south, 24th Street to the east, and 23rd Street to the west.

Three-Tower Complex Rises at 470-490 Kent Avenue in South Williamsburg, Brooklyn

Construction is rising on 470-490 Kent Avenue, a three-tower residential complex along the East River waterfront in South Williamsburg, Brooklyn. Designed by Brooklyn-based Brandon Haw Architecture LLP with Hill West Architects as the executive architect of record and developed by Naftali Group and Access Industries, the development will span 645,000 square feet and yield 607 units, including 89 condominiums, as well as 19,000 square feet of commercial space and a suite of amenities. New Line Structures & Development LLC is the general contractor for the project, which occupies a 4-acre plot bound by South 10th Street to the north, Division Avenue to the south, Kent Avenue to the east, and Wallabout Channel to the west.

The ninth-tallest building on our year-end construction countdown is 111 Washington Street, a 712-foot-tall residential skyscraper in Manhattan’s Financial District. Designed by Handel Architects and developed by Carlisle New York Apartments and Grubb Properties, which closed on a $48 million loan for the project over the summer, the 64-story structure will span 326,221 square feet and yield 462 residential units, 7,000 square feet of commercial space, and a 60-foot-long rear yard. Consigli Construction is the general contractor for the property, which is alternately addressed as 8 Carlisle Street and located at the corner of Washington and Carlisle Streets.
