Scaffolding Assembly Begins on the Flatiron Building for Exterior Restoration, in Flatiron District

A large amount of black netting and scaffolding is going up on all sides of the limestone and terracotta curtain wall of the Flatiron Building as it embarks on a nearly yearlong renovation. Designed by Daniel Burhnam, the 117-year-old steel-framed landmark is a classic example of the old New York architecture and continues to draw people from around the world to take in its iconic prow at the intersection of Broadway and Fifth Avenue.

Developer Flaneur Hospitality recently revealed renderings and a new name for 250 Fifth Avenue. Now known as “The Fifth Avenue Hotel,” the NoMad project is being designed by Perkins Eastman, PBDW Architects, and Martin Brudnizki Design Studio and involves the restoration of a 115-year-old former bank designed by McKim, Mead & White, and the construction of an adjacent 230-foot-tall, 24-story ground-up building.

Installation of the hand-laid brick masonry is nearly finished on the structure, which is designed by Francoise of Loci Anima along with Adamson Associates. YIMBY recently went on a hard hat tour of Skyline Tower, aka 23-15 44th Drive, which has made a dramatic impact on the rapidly growing skyline of Long Island City. The reinforced concrete superstructure stands topped out at 778 feet tall and is currently the tallest skyscraper in Queens and the outer boroughs.
