Over a year ago, one of the world’s most distinctive supermarket locations closed. On Tuesday, a new vision for the space, a Michaels arts and crafts store, came one step closer to reality, as the Landmarks Preservation Commission held a public hearing.
Upper East Side
A quintet of new works by architect Robert A.M. Stern are making their mark on various parts of Manhattan, all with his signature style. 70 Vestry Street is in the early stages of construction; 30 Park Place, which includes the Four Seasons Downtown hotel, opened its doors in October; 20 East End Avenue could open this year; and 220 Central Park South is on the rise adjacent to Billionaires’ Row. Today, we check in on his skyscraping residential building at 520 Park Avenue.
Florida-based Real Estate Inverlad Development and South Carolina-based Third Palm Capital have filed applications for a 32-story, 83-unit mixed-use tower at 249 East 62nd Street, located in the Lenox Hill section of the Upper East Side. The new building would encompass 145,130 square feet and stand 510 feet in height. Retail space will measure 2,561 square feet across the ground and cellar levels, followed by 83 residential units across the ground through 29th floors. The apartments should average 1,188 square feet apiece. Rafael Viñoly’s Hudson Square-based architecture firm is the architect of record, the Real Deal reported. The 8,765-square-foot site is presently vacant.
In September, an undeniably flashy proposal to modify an Upper East Side rowhouse went before the Landmarks Preservation Commission. It was not well-received. Last Tuesday, a scaled-down version won over the commissioners and work can now proceed at 210 East 62nd Street.
The Spence School, a private, all-girls school for grades K-12 on the Upper East Side, has filed applications for a six-story, 56,720-square-foot building at 412 East 90th Street, located in Manhattan’s Yorkville section. The facility appears to be geared towards athletics, featuring a two-story gymnasium, squash courts, an exercise room, training rooms, locker rooms, and laundry facilities. There will also be a administrative offices on the ground and third floors, a student cafe on the third floor, and a single classroom and a greenhouse on the sixth floor. The 83-foot-tall structure will be designed by Rogers Partners Architects. The 150-foot-wide, 15,000-square-foot site is occupied by a two-story parking garage. Demolition permits have not been filed.
