Collegiate School’s New 10-Story Building Tops Off at Riverside Center

The Collegiate School sold off its buildings on West 78th Street to its landmarked neighbor, the West End Collegiate Church, and now the new campus for the tony, all-boys educational institution is rising at 301 Freedom Place in the Riverside Center development. Landmarks Approves Changes for Residential Conversion of 164 West 74th Street, Upper West Side

Two months ago, YIMBY got a glimpse of the dramatic changes proposed to convert an Upper West Side community facility into a residential building. Last Tuesday, the Landmarks Preservation Commission approved those changes to 164 West 74^th Street.

Permits Filed: 200 Amsterdam Avenue, Upper West Side’s Tallest Building

In June, YIMBY revealed the glassy skyscraper at 200 Amsterdam Avenue, which may become the Upper West Side’s tallest building. Now permit applications have been filed for the 669-foot-tall structure.

10-Story, 180,000-Square-Foot Collegiate School Close to Topping Out at 301 Freedom Place South, Upper West Side

Construction is a single floor away from topping out at 301 Freedom Place South, located between West 61st and 62nd streets on the southern end of the Upper West Side. That’s where a 10-story, 179,863-square-foot Collegiate School, a private, all-boys prep school, is under construction. The progress can be seen thanks to a photo posted to the YIMBY Forums. A theater, a gymnasium, a fitness center, and a cafeteria will be located on the ground and cellar levels. Classrooms will span the second through ninth floors, with a library on the fifth floor. The 143-foot-tall structure has been designed by Kohn Pedersen Fox. Completion is expected in 2017.

13-Story, 19-Unit Mixed-Use Building Rises to Seventh Floor at 207 West 79th Street, Upper West Side

Construction is seven stories above street level on the 13-story, 19-unit mixed-use building under development at 207 West 79th Street, on the Upper West Side. The latest photo was posted by a user on the YIMBY Forums. The most recent building permits indicate the project will eventually measure 71,578 square feet and rise 158 feet, including the bulkhead. There will be 5,194 square feet of retail space on the ground floor. The residential units above, which will be condominiums, will range from two- to five-bedrooms, averaging 2,887 square feet apiece. Anbau Enterprises is the developer and Morris Adjmi Architects is behind the design, both inside and out. Completion is expected in the fall of 2017.

American Museum of Natural History Files Expansion Plans With Landmarks Preservation Commission

The American Museum of Natural History, located between West 77th and 81st streets on the Upper West Side, has filed plans with the Landmarks Preservation Commission (LPC) for their expansion project, the Wall Street Journal reported. Since the museum board approved the Studio Gang Architects-designed project late last year, the proposed expansion has grown from 218,000 square feet to 235,000 square feet. Also, the Richard Gilder Center for Science, Education, and Innovation — a ground-up six-story structure near 79th Street — has been altered to cut into only a quarter of an acre of Theodore Roosevelt Park, down from half an acre. Changes to the 2015 plans include reducing the number of trees removed from nine to seven, and demolishing three existing structures. Extensive reconfiguration work and upgrades to park space remain key elements of the project. In addition to the LPC, the Parks Department must also approve the project. Completion is tentatively expected in 2020.

14-Story Mixed-Use Building with Synagogue Planned at 212 West 93rd Street, Upper West Side

Congregation Shaare Zedek has partnered with developer Ornstein Leyton Company for a mixed-use project on the site of the congregation’s three-story synagogue at 212 West 93rd Street, on the Upper West Side. The congregation is having financial troubles and has concluded the only way to prevent it from dissolving is to sell the property to a developer, DNAinfo reported. Preliminary plans call for a 14-story building that would contain a new synagogue on the lower three floors, followed by residential units on the upper floors. No new building applications have been filed with the Buildings Department. The congregation has stated that it’s not feasible to expand the existing structure or retain the façade for a new building. The synagogue is not landmarked and can be demolished as-of-right.

Second Try Nets Landmarks Win for New Mixed-Use Building at 466-468 Columbus Avenue, Upper West Side

An over century-old little building on the Upper West Side will officially bite the dust. On Tuesday, the Landmarks Preservation Commission approved the demolition of the three-story building at 466-468 Columbus Avenue, and the construction of a new mixed-use building in its place.

Street Level Construction Underway on 19-Story, 72-Unit Mixed-Use Project, 2230 Broadway, Upper West Side

Construction is now at street level on the 19-story, 72-unit mixed-use building under development at 2230 Broadway, located on the corner of West 80th Street on the Upper West Side. The construction progress can be seen thanks to photos posted to the YIMBY Forums. The latest building permits indicate a 123,456-square-foot, 206-foot-tall tower is in the works. It will have 22,231 square feet of commercial-retail space across the ground floor and two cellar levels, followed by residential units on the second through 18th floors. The units should average 1,609 square feet apiece, which means condominiums are likely in the works. Friedland Properties is the developer and Stephen B. Jacobs Group is behind the architecture. Completion is scheduled for the first half of 2018.

Scaffolding Removal Underway at 210 West 77th Street, Upper West Side

It was a little over a year ago that the Naftali Group’s mixed-use building at 210 West 77th Street, on the Upper West Side, was about to top out. Now, construction of the building is almost at the finish line.
