Permits Filed: 88 Walworth Street, Factory to Synagogue Conversion in Bed-Stuy

Deep in the Hasidic territory at the northern edge of Bedford-Stuyvesant, old industrial buildings bump up against new apartments with staggered balconies alongside kosher grocery stores and bakeries. The neighborhood is dotted with new synagogues and yeshivas, built to keep up with the fast-growing population of ultra-Orthodox Jews. And every once in a while, an organization takes over an old factory to convert it, instead of tearing it down.

Yeshiva Ahavas Israel, headquartered in a curved, 1920s brick factory at Franklin and Flushing Avenues, found one such industrial building nearby at 88 Walworth Street. Earlier this week, they filed plans to convert the low-slung structure between Park and Myrtle Avenues into a house of worship.

255 Bleecker Street To Be Reborn As Mexican Restaurant

A one-story building in Greenwich Village will see a new life as a Mexican restaurant. On Tuesday, the Landmarks Preservation Commission approved a proposal to transform 255 Bleecker Street, most recently a sushi restaurant, into Tacombi – La Cornelia.

New Renderings of Herzog & de Meuron’s Plans for 36 Central Park South, aka 1 Park Lane

Last month, YIMBY posted the first renderings for the tower coming to 36 Central Park South, on the site of the old Helmsley Hotel. The first version was created by Handel Architects, and the second — which we only had a glimpse of — was designed by Herzog & de Meuron, and we now have additional images of that version.

On a dead-end block of Debevoise Street near Bushwick Houses in Williamsburg, a developer wants to erect a five-story, mixed-use apartment building. New building applications were filed last week for a 22-unit project at 40 Debevoise Street, between Graham Avenue and Humboldt Street, just north of the Bed-Stuy border.

Permits Filed, New Renderings for La Central Affordable Housing and YMCA in Melrose

Two weeks ago, YIMBY reported on the first permits for La Central, a sprawling affordable housing complex set to rise on a vacant lot in the Melrose section of the South Bronx. Now the city has filed more plans for the development’s two biggest residential towers at 556 and 600 Bergen Avenue, about two blocks from the 3rd Avenue-East 149th Street stop on the 2/5 trains. We’ve also got a few new renderings, including interiors for a planned YMCA.

JMH Development and Madison Estates just won Landmarks approval to transform the Brooklyn Heights Cinema into apartments, but their first project to rise in a historic district was the Townhouses of Cobble Hill, at 110-126 Congress Street. The development’s five new townhouses are inching toward completion, and renovations seem to have finished at the four 19th century Greek Revival homes.

UPDATE: while permits would seem to indicate condominium’s given the developer’s LLC, a rep for HTO has corrected YIMBY, and 411 Ninth Avenue will actually have rentals.

A sliver lot on the northwest corner of Ninth Avenue and 33rd Street has remained vacant for quite some time, but YIMBY now has the reveal for the building that will soon rise at 411 Ninth Avenue. HTO Architect is designing the project, which has been dubbed Skylight House.
