Ground Broken For Renovation Of Martin Luther King Park, Harlem

A groundbreaking ceremony has been held for the $3 million renovation of Martin Luther King Park, located along Malcolm X Boulevard between West 113th and 114th streets in the southern end of Harlem. The park will get entirely new basketball courts, playgrounds, a water play area, and a turf area. Other upgrades include an outdoor fitness center, as well as new vegetation and a comfort station. Quennell Rothschild & Partners is the landscape architect. The project is part of Mayor Bill de Blasio’s Community Park Initiative, where a total of 56 existing parks around the city will see renovations.



440 Elizabeth Avenue

216-Unit Redevelopment Proposed For Abandoned 25-Story Building At 440 Elizabeth Avenue, Newark

The Ishay Group is proposing to redevelop the long-vacant, 25-story, 246,600-square-foot Carmel Towers building at 440 Elizabeth Avenue, also known as 203-221 Meeker Avenue, in Newark’s South Ward. The dilapidated tower would contain 216 residential units ranging from one- to three-bedrooms, Jersey Digs reported. Amenities would include a lounge, entertainment room, pool, fitness center, roof deck, and community garden. Mancini Duffy Architecture is behind the renovation’s design. The project must first be approved by the Newark Central Planning Board, which is scheduled to hold a meeting on October 24.


523-529 Eighth Avenue

24-Story, 252-Key Hotel Filed At 525 Eighth Avenue, Garment District

Great Neck, N.Y.-based McSam Hotel Group has filed applications for a 24-story, 252-unit hotel building at 525 Eighth Avenue, located between West 36th and 37th streets in Midtown’s Garment District. The tower will encompass 88,127 square feet and rise 213 feet above street level to its roof. Guest amenities include a fitness center, bicycle storage, and a rooftop bar on the 24th floor. There will also be retail space on the ground floor. Gene Kaufman’s Union Square-based architecture firm is the architect of record. The 7,454-square-foot property, at 523-529 Eighth Avenue, is currently occupied by a single-story commercial building. Joseph P. Day Realty Corporation is the property owner.


Brooklyn Bridge Park

Construction Begins On Pier 3 Of Brooklyn Bridge Park in Brooklyn Heights

Ground has recently been broken to transform Pier 3, located within Brooklyn Bridge Park in Brooklyn Heights, into a functional park. Pier 3 represents the last portion of the Brooklyn Bridge Park project. It will feature a large lawn, a playground, walking paths, vegetation, and a plaza, according to a rendering released by Curbed NY. This portion of Brooklyn Bridge Park is estimated to cost $26 million and is scheduled to be completed in 2018. Michael Van Valkenburgh Associates is the landscape architect.
