Landmarks Wants Refined Expansion Plan for Institute for Community Living at 839 St. Marks Avenue, Crown Heights

A nonprofit that operates supportive housing wants to expand its facilities in Crown Heights, but it will have to do more work on the plan. Last Tuesday, the Landmarks Preservation Commission did not approve plans for the Institute for Community Living’s campus at 839 St. Marks Avenue, on the corner of Brooklyn Avenue in the Crown Heights North Historic District.

29 Norman Avenue

Single-Story, 23,000-Square-Foot Building Being Converted Into Multi-Use Commercial Space At 29 Norman Avenue, Greenpoint

The car company BMW is planning to convert the single-story, 23,000-square-foot warehouse at 29 Norman Avenue, in southern Greenpoint, located five blocks from the Nassau Avenue stop on the G train, into a multi-use commercial building. According to Bedford+Bowery, the property will feature a design studio for MINI (a car brand owned by BMW), a restaurant, creative office space, open public work space, and a gallery. The schedule A also includes an outdoor garden, and the property will reportedly host community events and performances. The conversion is being designed by Brooklyn-based nARCHITECTS. The building is being dubbed A/D/O, which stands for Amalgamated Drawing Office, and a targeted completion date has not been revealed.


360 Third Avenue

Restoration of Coignet Building Complete at 360 Third Avenue, Gowanus

Back in November of 2015, construction was well underway to restore the two-story, 3,000-square-foot former New York and Long Island Coignet Stone Company Building, also known simply as the Coignet Building, an individual landmark located at 360 Third Avenue, in Gowanus. Since then, construction of the new façade has finished and new windows have been installed. DNAinfo reports the project was also recently awarded the Lucy G. Preservation Moses Award by the New York Landmarks Conversancy. Whole Foods Market restored the exterior of the building and has placed the property on the market for $5 million. It could eventually be used as retail or community facility space, although the interiors still have to be gut-renovated. BL Companies is the applicant of record and Jablonski Building Conservation aided in the design process.


2359 Stillwell Avenue

Four-Story, Four-Unit Mixed-Use Building Planned At 2359 Stillwell Avenue, Gravesend

Brooklyn-based Basic Group Consulting has been filing applications since April of 2015 for a four-story, four-unit mixed-use building at 2359 Stillwell Avenue, in southern Gravesend, located directly beneath the Bay 50th Street stop on the D train. The new building will encompass 7,010 square feet and will feature a 917-square-foot ground-floor unit. There will be one residential unit per floor (or three full-floor units), and the family-sized apartments should average a spacious 1,017 square feet apiece. Sugnam Chang’s Brooklyn-based Basic Groups Corp. is the applicant of record. The 40-foot-wide, 4,000-square-foot property is currently occupied by a two-story residential building. Demolition permits were filed to remove it back in November.
